Desperate For Help: Sex does not feel as good as it had in the past.

    Hello, ladies.
I apologize in advance if this will be quite the long post, but I have no one to turn to for advice, and so I'm hoping with most of the details, someone may be able to help.

I have just turned 22, been dating my man for 4 years and we have just moved in together in July. He is the only person I have ever been with, and we have always had an amazing sex life.

At the end of June, my doctor advised me to stop taking Alese (birth control) due to the fact that I have not had my period in several months (not pregnant). After a month off the pill, I had my period for a week, then three days later, had a second period.

I do have a history of severe depression and lately have been feeling worse and yet better. Some may perhaps say that I'm feeling better because I'm numb to most situations now, but in my eyes, I feel as though everything's fine and that I am not depressed, but my man begs to differ. He fears I am depressed to such an extreme that I'm simply gliding along the surface.

At the age of 18-19, in approximately 8 months, I gained 90 pounds, which brought me up to 180-190 pounds. My doctor and I have done tests, results lead us to believe that I suffered from severe Hypothyroidism, then a second test resulted in her telling me that everything is fine and the weight gain is my fault. These tests took a long time to complete and so, I've been struggling and trying to lose weight for the past 3 years, though when I had originally gained weight, I was extremely active [to the degree that I rarely stayed still]. I am still active, but not as much as I used to. My doctor also believes that I am having difficulties because I have POS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), which she just so casually mentioned.

I have had ovarian cysts, kidney infections, seizure and concussions in the past (in case that information is of any use). And when I spoke to my doctor about all of my problems with severe mood swings, black-outs, forgetfulness, etc, she just wrote it off. And when I told her that I am sexually active, she gave me the dirtiest look, and in polite terms, called me a **** saying once I go off the pill, although it'll be difficult for me, but I have to ensure I do not get pregnant (I've never been pregnant in my life) and to not have sex, especially not with multiple partners (again, I have only ever had one partner my entire life, and I am still happily with him).

And lastly, factors which also tie into my depression is that after College, I have had less of a social life and went from being the popular girl, to the girl everyone ignores and rarely invites out. I'm the best friend when someone needs something, and then invisible when they no longer require my help. Everyone considers me as the therapist, and to say most of my "friends" take advantage of that, is an understatement. I love to help, but when people only speak to me because they need advice, money, a place to stay, a buffer, etc, I grow tired of it.

Being the "therapist" has also taken quite a toll on me in this case. My parents have been together since they were 11, have never been with anyone else their entire lives (romantically and or sexually) and after being together for 34 years, they're beginning to split up. They have been unhappy for a few years, but it has progressively gotten worse in the past several months. A few weeks after I moved out, my father did as well. My parents still talk daily, don't really argue, and they do still love each other and want to be together, but they simply are not on the same page anymore and cannot be together too long without getting frustrated. So, BOTH of my parents have turned to me as their "marriage guru", despite the fact that I am not yet married myself. I work with my mother during the week, and I work with my father on weekends (I am a singer, he is my manager and sound engineer), so I am with them both all the time. I don't mind helping them, but to hear them both say things like "I love him/her, but I just can't do it anymore." is breaking me apart. I show no signs of emotion, give them both unbiased advice, tell them the sometimes brutal truth, stay strong and break down in tears once they leave.

So, with all that in mind... For the past few weeks, my boyfriend and I have been having complications in the bedroom, which is definitely uncharted territory for us. At first, we assumed it was because I was off the pill, just had my period, then had a second period, etc. for I was feeling rather (for lack of better terms) numb. I could feel his touch, and although it felt good, it just wasn't completely pleasant. Over time, I've slowly begun regaining the pleasurable sensation, but I'm still not anywhere near to the climax I used to hit. It's passionate, he knows exactly what I like, we take part in foreplay, different positions, oral sex and intercourse, but that's just it - it feels good and that's about it. Only once in the past month or so have I been able to climax to the point of no return, but the rest of the time, sex just simply does not feel quite as intense as it had for the past 4 years.

The sudden change in pleasure is certainly scaring us both. He worries that it may have to do with the fact that I'm self conscious about my weight, that I am not sexually attracted to him anymore, that I want something or someone different or that I do not love him anymore. He is the most understanding person you will ever encounter, and for him to begin to worry, is extremely unusual and makes me worry even more (and I'm the type to be paranoid over any little thing). I tend to think it may be that I'm unhappy with myself physically, emotionally and mentally. I've gone from living my life thinking one way, to suddenly beginning to change and am finding myself taking a new path. Life has taken a great toll on me, and I hate myself for letting such trivial things seem like the end of the world when my life is nowhere near difficult. I feel alone and as if no one cares about me, although I know I do have true friends to support me. My parents potentially breaking up is definitely causing a lot of friction in my life, but I don't really feel the impact that it seems to actually be having. All in all, I love my boyfriend dearly. He is my rock, my best friend, my support, my strength, my laughter, my future... He saved my life (literally), adores me to pieces, would do absolutely anything for me and would never hurt me in the least. I cannot see myself spending a moment without him. And yet, when we are the closest, it doesn't feel the way it had.

Could it just be that although I feel perfectly fine, underneath it all I am truly overwhelmed by everything going on around me? Is there something wrong with me physically or mentally? Perhaps there's a problem with our relationship that I'm just not seeing? Although I am becoming less "numb", I simply don't understand why sex doesn't feel as good as it has in the past. We used to be so surprised when sex would keep getting better and better, then suddenly, I fell off a cliff without warning. I cannot speak to my friends, because they aren't the type to be good for advice, or they would tell everyone. I cannot speak to either of my parents (only child, sex talk is a wonderful shade of taboo) and even my doctor is too ignorant to push aside her own feelings to speak to me. My boyfriend is the person I always go to for anything and or everything, but he doesn't know what to do this time (which is rare), and this is taking too much of a toll on him to try to help.

Does anyone see anything I'm missing? Please... I don't know what to do, I have no where to turn.

Again, I apologize for the novel-like post. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read and respond, I truly do!

After rereading over this post, all the emotions which never touched me, seemed to finally grab at me and shake me around. To finally see everything written down, it just hit me like a ton of bricks.

But I'd like to take a second, and just mention. My man, is an amazing man to me.

He helps me clean around the house, he makes me supper whenever he gets home before I do, he tells me I'm beautiful and that he loves me every day, multiple times a day. We go out often, flirt with one another and people stop us and say that it seems like we've just started dating and are in the "puppy love" stage. He takes amazing care of me, to the point that my overprotective parents truly love him like family. He is a big gamer (which I am REALLY not), and he always stops his games and comes to kiss me randomly. We are able to do our own thing, separately and side by side, and still enjoy ourselves. He goes out with his friends, I go out with mine whenever they ask me out, but we prefer to go out together because we're best friends. Even though we've been living together and see each other practically every day, whenever we leave for work, he texts me in the car (he carpools, so he's not the driver) saying that he misses me already, despite that I left only 15 minutes before then.

He's extremely good to me, does everything he can for me but still caters to his own needs, so we have a good balance together. I don't feel angry towards him for anything, there is no resentment, no hostility, no regret, no lack of emotion... etc.

And it's not the type of over barring relationship it may sound to be. We give each other lots of space to have our own time, to be individuals not just a couple, etc. We text during work, have supper together, he goes and does his thing, I do mine. Then we spend time together before bed. Or we'll get home from work and go out together or with our friends, sometimes he'll go out and I'll stay home, or he'll be at home while I'm away for the weekend with my family. Some people may think it's too much for a relationship, but it's how we've always been, and we prefer it. If we don't speak for two days, we grow to really miss one another. The longest we've spent without speaking is approximately a week when I was out of the country, and it felt like forever.

So I don't believe there's anything wrong with US, just me... But I don't know what. It could be physical, emotional or mental, and I have no idea where to start look for an answer. I love him, heart and soul.

And when we moved in together at the beginning of July, I had an extremely high sex drive (a few days after I stopped birth control). Then it slowed two-three weeks later just before I had my period, and it's been troublesome since then. I hadn't had my period before last month in so many months that I lost count - could that have something to do with it? Maybe dealing with all of my parents issues is taking more of a toll on me than I had realized... (I'm the type of person that if I'm surrounded by something too long, I begin to adapt it as my own. For example, I once dealt with a girl who was raped and needed help, so she turned to me. After months of helping her, for several weeks, I was convinced that her situation, had happened to me.)

I love my man profoundly, he is the greatest thing that has happened to me and he helped me turn my life around. So why can I suddenly not connect with him the way I used to? Something is clearly wrong with me.

It simply sounds like you're suffering from depression. Are you on any antidepressant medications?? I know that some anti-depressant medications can cause weight gain. If you're not, some people turn to eating to comfort themselves without even knowing it. That may explain the sudden weight gain. I also suffer from depression and when I'm going through a tough time, it's really hard for me to get in the mood. Have you considered seeing a therapist or counselor regarding your depression? It may help and combined with an anti-depressant you might feel a ton better. Usually the people around us notice the changes in us before we do, so if your boyfriend feels you're not yourself and are depressed, he may be right.

I have a really hard time getting "horny" when I'm depressed or feeling anxious. It just isn't there and my fiance has questioned me in the past if it's him which it's not him at all. I just feel so blah and helpless...out of sorts, which makes it hard for me to even think about sex. I was at one point on an SSRI called Zoloft and it does help, but I ended up gaining 50+ lbs from it. I then switched to Wellbutrin XL and the pounds started coming off, but it's not as effect of an anti-depressant for those who suffer with severe bouts of depression, but so far it works for me. When I went off birth control a year ago my anxiety spiked through the roof and they added a low-dose of another SSRI called Celexa and after the first week 1/2 I could tell a huge different that I was more calm and happy, but I was always so unmotivated. I started to gain weight and I had enough so I asked the doctor to wean me off. Since then, I've been okay, but I just know for me I can't be on any hormonal birth control...perhaps you're the type where you're better being ON it.

Why didn't your doctor just switch you to a different kind? Why would you need to come off birth control completely?

It just sounds to me that your "problem" started once you were taken off birth control. That may be one of the sources of your problems.

Another thing I feel you need to do is to tell your parents that you don't want to get in the middle of it, that you love them both, but you just can't listen to them anymore regarding theri relationship. It's hard enough to see your parents split, but to be in the middle is worse.

Also- you don't need friends that only talk to you when they need something. You're better off without them! Maybe your boyfriend and you need to get out more, meet new people, try new things, go on dates, etc. You will probably meet new people who are more genuine and fun to hang out with.

Thank you for your insight, Lizzard (I have to admit, giggled at the name!).

My boyfriend and I have a very similar personality and are often the center of attention due to our bubbly-ness. But once I became extremely depressed, I shadowed into the background and became a wallflower. Now that I'm trying to reclaim the spotlight, I feel pretty invisible (a feeling I used to like, but now hate). Going out and meeting people in my area is a rather somewhat difficult task, because most speak one language, while I speak English. But I'll definitely take your advice and try to do something different to hopefully meet new people.

The problem with my parents is that they have no one else to turn to and refuse to see a therapist. So they both feel as though without me, they have no one else since they always used to turn to each other, and yet the other is the problem. I feel guilty for leaving them to deal with it themselves (awkward thought, I know). I thought I could handle the weight of it, but I suppose not. Do you really think that it's really making that much of a difference?

Yes, it definitely is a coincidence that it had started then. My doctor has proscribed me to start taking a stronger and different pill, but I haven't had my period this month yet to begin taking it. My man is under the impression that birth control cannot affect the degree of pleasure, but as you said, it seems to all have started then.

I really do thank you, from my heart. It's nice to be able to have someone who actually listens without demanding something in return :/

I have not been on any anti-depressants at all, my doctor refuses to proscribe them to me because she says that it will make me gain weight and I'm fat enough (nice, right?). But sexually, I did feel much more interested while taking the pill than I have off of it, though I'm not sure why. I never thought, but perhaps you make a good point that I might need the hormones that are in it to help control my "levels". Hm. Something to think about.

And she advised me to stop taking the birth control pill completely because my period had stopped for several months. She said that once that happens, I need to stop immediately, then I have to wait 3 weeks after my first period after not being on the pill to begin the new brand of birth control.

Oh! Lastly, I've thought about therapy, but I have never been under the impression that my life is "bad enough" to need the help. I'm just moody, is what I'm told. I don't have it rough. I have a pretty easy life, but the smallest thing to someone else feels like the world is falling down to me.

And I'm sorry that you also suffer from depression, but I'm glad to hear that you were able to find something that suits you and a loving fiancee who is there to support you. Most men don't bother to stick around, so I am certainly happy for you that you have found someone who loves you through it all. I sincerely do hope you get better.

I do think your parents going to you about their relationship problems DOES make a difference. It obviously bothers you, and maybe they don't seek therapy from anywhere else, because they know they have you. If you tell them you love them both but don't want to get in the middle perhaps that will give them the shove to see a therapist if they really feel the need it. You're not the right person for them to be venting to about their relationship. I'm sure they will understand if you explain it to them.

Perhaps your new BC pill is what's playing havoc on your moods? Although it does take up to 3 months for your body to adjust to a new pill.

I haven't started the new BC pill just yet. I should be getting my period soon (with any luck) and once my period begins, I can then start taking the pill.

But I spoke to my man about all of this yesterday. He was able to really see into things more than he has in a long time, I suppose he's realized how much it's hurting me to hurt him unintentionally. He's thinking that since I've lost myself, I'm not the person I want to be and I'm taking on the weight of everyone else, I'm just falling apart and my subconscious is taking over.

My mom has found a house that she likes near my apartment, and is debating about moving. My dad has only been on his own for a month, but it seems like they've both silently come to the conclusion that it's over. She's spoken to me about houses in the past and has even shown me multiple ones, but this time, it feels serious. My heart completely sank when she told me she figured out how much she could sell our house for, how much she could put as a down-payment, could get a loan and buy it.

So I suppose you are right, I'm not the person they should be talking to about all of this. I thought I could handle it, but I'm thinking not. Thank you for listening and for your advice, it does mean the world to me. I'm going to sit them down this weekend (we're going away as a family) and tell them that they have to confide in a professional who can actually do something to help.

It's time that I focus on me and become the person I wish to be - the person I was meant to be had things not thrown me off course in the past. Thank you, thank you very much. It may not seem like much, but it did help turn a lot around. I was able to clear my mind, talk to my man, and get at least an idea of where I should be headed, so I'm not quite as clueless anymore.

I wish you all the love and success in the world. I truly do.
