How we try new positions without it being awkward?

Not long ago, me and my boyfriend attempted to have sex 'doggy-style' but not anally. We know this is possible, but we found it very awkward as if he didn't want to do it. We're all up for trying new positions, but I think we find positions like that awkward because we're not facing each other, and we feel it's more intimate and less awkward when we are facing each other. We have only ever done missionary where he has been on top of me and i have of him, also tried to have sex standing up but there is nowhere in our house with enough free wall space to prop myself up against!

How can we try new positions without it being awkward that we're not facing each other, or are there any good positions where we are facing each other? And how can I suggest these?

Get a book on sex positions. there are tons of positions you can try where you are facing each other.

I know there are many books, but I am not the kind of person that would go to a library or a bookshop and have the confidence to buy something like that. The same with a sex shop if it was for me and my partner, even if we were both there. I did search the internet a little bit, but didn't find much apart from what we have already done, I just wanted to post and see if anyone here had any advice

If possible try going to a hotel on a weekend which caters for couples. Some of them come equipped with mirrors around and on the ceiling. If you like the experience, you can try having this assortment arranged in your own bedroom. The objective is to see your self in the act. It would take away the issue of non-intimacy and bring in a very new and fresh perspective. I don't want to assume but if you are new in your relationship, you will learn in time. Just experiment and broaden your horizons gradually and comfortably.

Around here there are stores in the malls that are novelty gift shops. Kooky things for wedding gifts, birthdays, showers and such, but it's not a sex shop, far from it. They'll have books on positions in the wedding-shower gift section. If it'll help your embarassment you could always buy a card like it's a gift, but the store clerks in these places really don't care or judge, it's just a novelty gift shop.
A book really is the best way to see illustrations of different postions. My wife and I once did a different page a week just to see if we could do them all, some we couldn't, was fun, and funny, trying some of them though. You'll end up with variations of some them that work for you.

I think there are some websites with drawings of LOTs of different positions. I think the trick is just to have fun trying things. Sure, most will be akward, so laugh it off, and try something else. Different things work for different people so you really can't go by what others recommend.

If you feel uncomfortable going to a store, by online. Trying to describe the various positions in text only is tough. Seeing pictures or diagrams really helps.

Verbal encouragement can do wonders. We enjoy many positions that don't involve face to face. Spoons, for example, is very gentle and loving, and when we give each other verbal encouragement it heightens arousal and excitement for both of us. Doggy position can seem kind of impersonal, but the "animal" aspect of it can be extremely arousing for both of you if you're in the right frame of mind. Again, giving your partner verbal clues that he is making you feel really good can do wonders to overcoming the feeling of not being quite close enough or intimate enough. I know when I tell my husband how good what he's doing feels, and I want ever more, he loves that.

sexinfo101 is a good source of positions. Google it.

I second jns. I also find positions like doggy style to be a little less intimate. An easy one you can try is to lay on your back and raise your feet, puting your ankles/knee-pits on his shoulders as he enters you. It's a little different angle, but lets him get a little deeper, while still keeping that face to face intimacy!
