I mean he may get off to some extent by feeling inferior, or just by not being the sole focus of your attention. Hence the asking you describe what you like about the other guy. You could try saying something about how you loved the other guy's size and see how he reacts. It'll be either hot or cold, no in between (and I think he'll approve) - if he likes it he'll ask for more info, if he doesn't he'll shut down right away. In the unlikely event it's the second thing, it'll be his fault - he asked.
