I need some help, my periods have just started and have got the pill from my doc. My boyfriend is a bit older than me and says we cant have normal sex for several weeks until the pill kicks in. Is that true?

He says we can still have bjs and bumsex, I cant get off on them the same way. Using his fingers don't work so well too. A gf said he should use condoms, he says he cant risk it as if it breaks then I might be up the duff. My ma would go mental if I was pregnant. How long am I gonna have to wait?

Your doctor should have advised you on how long you need to wait. I don't use the Pill so I cannot say for sure but I think you have to wait one full cycle before you're safe. Condoms rarely break and if that should happen there is always the morning after pill - not that I'm suggesting you should rely on that but it's there if you needed it. I would call your doctor and find out.

That is very true Carol what Romy was saying about one complete cycle you would have to wait for the birth control to take effect. I am a dad of 4 daughters. So I can say, I know more then some men do on this topic. All 4 of daughters are on the Norco shot for birth control each shot last 3 months instead of taking a pill everyday. It's easy and has work very well with no problems with my daughters.Maybe ask your Obgyn about the shot instead Carol, but condoms work just fine with no issue. Just most guys do not like them at all.Good luck what ever you decide to do.

First of all there are a number of creams, foams and spermicidal gels available but they are no where near as safe as a condom or Birth Control Pills.

Also you should keep track of when you menstruate as it is IMPOSSIBLE for a woman to get pregnant unless she is ovulating thus NO EGG...no possibility of Fertilizing that egg and no possibility of that Fertilized Egg implanting itself in the Uterine Wall.

Keep track of such things regardless if you are using birth control or not and it does tale some time for BC Pills to work...how long depends upon the person and the drug.

Birth control pills don't reach full effectiveness until 3months. They are a little better than a condom before that. At minimum you are supposed to wait a week after you start them but the type of pill and whether you start it according to your period or another time during the month/week will have an impact. You should read the instructions that come with it and if you have questions call your pharmacist or doctor. You can also consult planned parenthood doctors and nurses for free. Personally I wouldn't have sex without backup protection until the 2nd pack but there really is no reason you can't use condoms during the more questionable periods of time between that first week and the 2nd or even 3rd pack depending how cautious you want to be. You could also use some of the other methods that aren't as good as a condom but make an ok backup to either condom (make sure it is latex safe) or the pill. I wouldn't have sex without a condom at all if you both haven't done STD testing and you haven't started pap smears. These things should be done before and after you start a sexual relationship with each person without a condom.

There are Birth Control Drugs such as Ortho Tricyclen which will allow a women to have safe in the sense you won't get pregnant...sex in 4 weeks.

There are other forms of Birth Control which causes the Cervical Mucus to become to thick for Sperm to swim through it.

Drugs like Morning After and Plan B taken asap after sex prevent the fertilized egg cell from implanting itself in the uterine wall.

Anyways....there are a number of BC Drugs that work well after 3 to 5 weeks.

As I posted there are newer BC drugs that work faster and if your guy is creative at all I am certain you two could enjoy forms of non-vaginal sex for awhile.

I say this but I also realize the number of guy's out there who are CLUELESS...so....I guess in some cases YOU might have to teach him!! LOL!!!
