I had to google this after your post jns. It seems there is evidentiary support for the "up-suck" theory that a female orgasm helps sperm move to their goal. I suppose this is the one new thing I will learn today, though I am a bit old to be having more children.

There is at least one apparently well-educated woman - Elisabeth Lloyd - who attacks the up-suck theory in her book "The Case of the Female Orgasm: Bias in the Science of Evolution".

In her book (and on her webpage for all to see) she refers to a TV documentary that came out a few years back purporting to show a camera inside a vagina, at the cervix, for all the world making it look like the cervix was dipping into a semen pool, sucking it up. I recall viewing said program and it looked pretty convincing to my untrained eye. But the author says "Don't get sucked in", and that the whole thing is very deceptive. She says that people have been trying to prove the theory since 1950 and that such a decisive finding would have been celebrated.

I am now off to the bedroom to do my own bit of research. My wife has agreed, in the name of science, to participate in a local study of the subject. Even though our government grant has not yet come through, we shall proceed notwithstanding.

I shall publish a report in due course.

Yes that's very true JNS, it opens up the cervix more allowing more sperm to flow through, increasing the chances of the egg to be fertilize.
