I'm not saying damage, I'm saying desensitize. IMO, two different things, damage would be more permanent. The desensitization can be overcome by not using a vibe for a period of time. I'm not against them, I use them (only in the company of my hubby), we've got more sex toys than I'll ever admit, but I've talked to more than enough women who have had the same experience. Excessive use, caused loss of sensitivity for a while, but regained after not using it for a while.

I love sex toys. They're great fun and can be incorporated into lots of different kinds of play, and I've never seen one that could be "damaging" (well, I have, but they're often niche fetish toys that you won't encounter in a plain adult store anyway).
If you're looking for just a vibrator, go with a cheap one at first. My favorite vibe ever came from Spencer's (of all places!). It cost $10 and lasted me for years. It was loud, not waterproof (if you want to waterproof a non-waterproof vibe, get a rubber 'O' ring from the local hardware store in the appropriate size), and very plain but I loved it until it died, and it gave me a good comparison for other toys I might want.
If you want a whole toy box in the future: I suggest a vibe rather than a dildo for first-time use because it can be used with or without penetration as you like it, with the vibration on or off. That said, a nice dildo is a great thing to have around as well once you figure out what dimensions you like best. I'd also suggest (eventually) a small anal toy (I prefer plugs to beads but it's your party!), a lot of lube (I love astroglide but we have some KY warming and tingling lube that's very nice), and a second vibrator or dildo in a different size to stir things up. I don't use condoms with my toys because A) They're cheap toys and I don't mind if they wear a little faster and B) I tend to go for the hard plastic or acrylic toys rather than jelly rubber or other materials that are prone to falling apart after a little hard use.
Babeland is a great site for learning about different toy materials. They have a very full glossary of terms related to sex and sex toys, which will help you figure out exactly what you might like. Good luck picking just one!
