- He either wants to boost his self-confidence by making you jealous (since he is a jealous person himself he assumes he knows the 'tricks').

- He is being too nice and polite to a girl who is obviously interested, but tells you about it because he wants to be honest.

- He mentions this girl because he is a little bit interested in her and wants you to consider the possibility of him getting together with her (since she's more available than you are).

Ditto all of the above. The last one being a little bit shady. Now what would be shadier is that not telling that girl that he is already taken - I would seriously get offended.

Best thing to do is air out your laundry and tell him how you feel and what you do not like about it. If he doesn't do what he is supposed to do, be ready to wear your big girl panties.
