My advice is start slow...maybe invite him to a "group function" where the "group" is both guys and gals.

Well, one of you is going to have to make the first move and since you're the one obviously interested (he may be too and you just don't know), then perhaps you should try talking to him. Something just casual in class to strike up conversation and then go from there? Maybe ask him if he'd like to study together. Or if you know something that he's into, strike up conversation that way.

I wouldn't worry about approaching. Just do it.
Back in high school (going back a few years, but...) I wasn't necessarily SHY, but I was quiet. I was kind of awkward and people never knew how to take me--a lot of the more outgoing people thought they couldn't joke around with me. So bottom line was, I was just quiet. ANYWAY, I got along with a lot of the other awkward, quiet, shy kids. They felt more comfortable with me. So he'll probably be more comfortable talking to you off the bat. But just talk. Make conversation. Tell him a joke. Make a snarky comment to him in class...

From a man's perspective I can say that one of the best options for a woman/girl looking for a decent guy to have a relationship with is to find a shyer and perhaps more quiet kind of guy and then take a proactive approach.

Good luck OP, never be afraid to ask for what you want, simply orchestrate some kind of situation where the two of you can chat. Can you add him on FB and send him a message?

I have always been shy and never new how to approach a girl, even now. This makes it difficult for me now that I will be back out there at 50.
I don't know who was interested me but It would have been (and now) real nice if any girl would of kind of open the door up. I think that buddhaboy has good advice. The only thing I think I would add is, if choose to bridge the gap at some time, don't to it too abruptly, if he interested it might intimidate him and then he may shut down. If nothing happens then make your approach a little stronger, in small steps. If you try to reach him and he does not respond either way, being shy he may not even be aware of what you are trying to do. I know for me I wouldn't.
I was show shy that I didn't even lose my virginity until I was 21. I had only been out with about 3 girls til then.
            Good luck,
            Y

I was always shy - but I would have been very happy if someone had approached me.

One thing to be aware of though - if he is really exceptionally shy and insecure be sure that it is clear that you are not joking when you approach him and don't do it when other people are around. Just ask him if he'd like to get lunch, or ice-cream, or see a movie, or something.

Approach him step by step.... Greet him, then if he response that will be the chance!

Maria this is good opportunity for you to get into relationship with him because you both seems to be of same behavior and attitude, before getting started you have to learn his likes and dislikes which will help you in getting closer to him, since you both feel shy your relationship will last long.
