    Help, in a sudden "break"...

I had a huge fight with my boyfriend of three years+ on 2/11. He told me that he fell out of love with me "a little" - at first he said he didn't feel any love for me at all. He's always been the type to hold everything in until the last minute, so that doesn't surprise me. This came as a huge shock. I felt like we were in a place of commitment, and I'd finally found someone who loves me unconditionally.

Later on, he suggested that it was just because he was stressed about school and the fact that he has three tests coming up this week. I've also been sick, so I guess due to the fact that I've been sleeping a lot he felt like he was "alone" and we were on different time-tables and just living two separate lives in one apartment. Also the fact that we're both broke, looking for jobs, and I've been suffering through a serious depression since November. A lot has been going on with my family too, but he seems to think that if I am unhappy then he has messed up. He acts like my happiness is entirely his responsibility, so if I'm not happy then he's a failure.

I think he's always afraid that if he expresses how he's feeling, then he's not paying attention to how I'm feeling. I think it's also partly my fault. Right now, he's the only good thing I have going. I don't have anything else in my life that I'm really living for. And this hasn't been kept a secret from him - it's pretty obvious. I think that's a heavy burden to put on somebody else. Even though I know he wanted to carry it, I think he feels weak now that he knows he can't. He wants to be strong for me, because I'm not strong. I feel bad having made him feel that way without knowing it.

I just am frustrated. I thought we had great communication, but for all three years most of our bumps have somewhat involved him not sharing his feelings with me. It's like he needs a thousand years to develop the right words or to understand his own feelings! So, a lot of the time he just lets it build up. I also vented a bit about how I find his care-giving style of love to be a little too fatherly and suffocating sometimes, and I think he felt a huge blow about that. He said he felt unappreciated and misunderstood, and I thought we got that covered when I apologized and said I was speaking out of a place of stress. We set new guidelines... I thought it was over. He seemed shocked and appalled when I said so, and said at the time that he still sees me as a girlfriend and partner. And then yesterday, he says he doesn't? That we no longer act like equals? That he wishes we did more together? These were all things I touched upon, yet he didn't seem to agree at the time! I don't know if it's frustration bubbling up from everywhere all at once, or what... but I just feel really heartbroken and unsure of how to act or what to do now.

I know I've been taking advantage of his kindness. I really, really do. I just feel like it's a slap in the face after I've been sick. We haven't been able to have sex much either, since he wasn't in the mood after his oral surgery, then I came down with a much of migraines, my hormones have been off, I've been on my period, and now this... and now I just feel foolish for even trying to initiate anything. He says he still thinks I'm attractive and cute (some of his complaints were about me not receiving compliments and complaining about my looks when he thinks I'm just fine), but I just... I didn't know what to do at the time.

On 2/12, we fought again. I woke up crying, and I stayed crying the whole day. However, I thought things would be back once he left to take an exam, but when he did he was like - I want to break up. It was final. I know now that you're not supposed to, but I begged him, pleaded with him to reconsider, and I even got on my hands and knees. That is when he sobbed that he just "didn't want this" anymore. I became even more hysterical, and we called my dad to pick me up. I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't stop crying. My heart was racing. My head was racing.

So, I made the worst decision ever and I drove back over at 5AM to "fight for my love" and try to talk things out again. It seemed to work at the time. He seemed happy even to see me, even though he said that I was crazy... We talked things through. I was rational this time. We spoke and communicated, even wrote a list of things that I had to change to better myself - first and foremost - and what times/methods would make communication more worthwhile for both of us. When we finally went to sleep, he said he felt "optimistic" and we began to cuddle, he was more physically affectionate (holding my hands, etc), and he even started talking about how things were going for him - just stuff in general that was on his mind, unrelated to everything that was going on. We even joked about when how he would say he loved me this time, and he said he was even willing to give this up to 6 months of a shot. Very receptive.

HOWEVER, he overslept the next day (no surprise...), and I had to drive him to his exam which he was 15 mins late for. It ended horribly. It completely changed his mood and the atmosphere around us from optimistic to no hope. He said that it would've been fine had I never come over, and then he could blame his school problems solely on himself, but as things were now he couldn't help feeling resentful. He is the kind of person who school is his number one source of stress in life, so I feel like if he is beginning to equate me with his failure then it is no wonder that he says he doesn't love me anymore. He basically said that I should've respected his wish for space when he made it, and that it seems like I don't respect his feelings or wishes in the relationship due to that. He said I'm immature - which I am - and that I need to grow up and start taking care of myself. He basically said that he misses how we use to talk about our day when we both had things going on, going out and doing things together, etc, and that when he looks back at the last year of our relationship he just sees a bunch of "missed opportunities" where we didn't do the things we had said we would. He sees more bad then good right now.

I took my stuff, and basically I'm thinking of keeping no contact/limited contact for about three weeks. This'll give him two weeks to recuperate after his exams and be alone in the apartment, and a week to be with his family for his birthday. I asked him to at least let me know he got down to his parents' place alright, and I'll contact him on his birthday still to wish him a happy one. He replied to this with a smile and a "well you have my number" - when I mentioned his reaction seemed like a good sign (I'm really forcing it, aren't I?) he replied with: "Well, I don't hate you. I still care about you a lot." I think that's more then I started off with when we first met, and we have AT LEAST two years of really great memories before we moved in together... so isn't it worth a shot? He seems to flip-flop between some feelings and no feelings, but ultimately I'm convinced that this is all just the heavy weight of a million pounds of unspoken stress crushing and burying what is still remaining love for me. I want to believe and hope that, but he's reminded me time and again not to put too much hope into things working out if his feelings don't change. But if they do week by week, moment to moment, then there's still a lot of remaining emotion behind our relationship. I don't think it's over.

But here's a general schedule of all of our events:

-November, I had a huge panic attack about school and we almost broke up over that. We talked, and he said he needed "more from me" regarding getting my medicines straight and going back to my doctors. I aligned to see a therapist again and got with my doctor to take my medicines again (which inevitably caused my hormone fluctuation, migraines, and extreme fatigue). We talked it out, and the next day we cried about how we still wanted to make things work. He said he still loved me. Things went back to normal, we resumed our relationship.

-He had oral surgery, and was feeling out of it for around a week. We stopped having sex regularly due to this, and never fully recovered.

-My migraines started and grew to the point that I had to go to the ER after them persisting for over a week. He was very doting throughout all of this, so I had no idea that things weren't OK. I was definitely receiving more then I was giving in the relationship for a very long time, and I think the reality of it all really formulated around this point. We have different love styles, so due to the fact that I was depressed and ill, I wasn't expressing his "acts of service"/housechores-style of love that he expected nor did I know he expected it. He always put on a happy face, and never complained even when I'd ask direct questions.

-My period from hell started which gave us another reason to grow distant from each other.

-I asked him why he was acting so cold and if he still loved me. We had the first fight in the middle of the night.

This is my conclusion: we moved in together too soon, and I lost my own identity/wishes as a person. Due to the fact that I couldn't contribute financially, it felt like we were just "playing house" while we were both struggling to find work, wanting to go out but being unable to monetarily/due to sickness, etc. Oh yeah, and it's a small complaint, but even our futon broke down awhile (we never managed to get my Dad to come over to fix it), so we weren't even able to be together when we WERE together. A lot of **** just... all at once. I feel like we can make it work if we step back - I move back in with my parents, and we go back to dating on weekends . When we meet again, I want to show him the strong, confident me with plans for the future that I've tried to foster in our few weeks apart, and keep the conversation lighthearted and friendly. I want us to talk about what we've been doing, and have more fun memories grow from our being together. I think if we do that, it'll be worth it... but I've made a lot of post-breakup mistakes already. Is there even any hope?

Right now our status is "taking a break", but technically still together.

I'm just worried it'll be a "out of sight, out of mind" situation more then a he-misses-me one... I'm especially worried his parents will convince him to just drop everything entirely. I'm thinking about sending him three texts only in three weeks -

1, When he has his last exam sending a "Do your best! I believe in you!" text - or will that remind him of how I ****ed up his last exam?
2, when/if he texts me like he said he would about getting to his parents' alright, saying that I'm really glad to hear that, I hope the trip down was great, and that he'll have a fantastic birthday week with his family.
3, on his actual birthday either call(?) or text(?) to wish him a happy birthday, and joke that I hope he eats lots and lots of yummy minty castle cake.

I think you should stop over planning everything and let it come naturally.

Your idea of moving back in with your parents and seeing each other on weekends is a good one. Start from the beginning. At the same time, enjoy this time to start looking at your life from a positive point of view and see the beautiful little things in life that make you happy. You need to start loving yourself before you can truly love someone else. It's worth it, but it doesn't happen in a few weeks. One step at a time and you'll reach the top.

    Take care of yourself.

I think you've summed up the problems pretty well.

You need more care and attention than he is prepared to continue giving. He has been lovingly carrying you along physically and emotionally for years without complaining. As a guy, he thinks when his girl isn't happy, it is his job to fix it. We're just wired that way. He has reached the conclusion that he cannot fix you and deserves a girl who is more capable of carrying a more equal share of the relationship. Someone who is capable of putting his needs, when necessary, ahead of her own.

Living apart is a great idea. Dating may work out, but because he has an impression of you developed over three years, you will have to work very hard to convince him that the next three years will be significantly different.

What he would need to see is that you have changed from a taker into a giver. He will need to see that your moves and behaviors are about others and not about getting what you need. Your decision to wake him up in the middle of the night before an important exam was all about you and not about what he needed. Sending him a text before another exam will come across as the same thing. Save it for after the exam. And if you are fishing for a response that is reassuring to YOU, don't send it at all.

It sounds like you have some significant mental health issues to work out. His parents, and now he, see that. I suggest you focus first on dealing with those issues so that when you enter into your next relationship (with either him or someone else) you will do so successfully.

      Good luck to you.

        UPDATE -

After not contacting him for just a little while, I decided to take a chance and called him last night to wish him good luck on his exams and a happy valentine's day. He seemed very receptive - he picked up the phone, and we talked back and forth for forty minutes without me pushing the conversation along. I kept the conversation calm, but lighthearted as I mentioned a few things that were already going well for me. He was the one who mentioned that he already felt a lot more optimistic about everything, and although he said he isn't in a position to really actively date me again (he wants to wait for at least a month before going on an "official" date, so that he can make sure not to mix up our new attempt with old feelings of resentment and hurt) he still wants to keep our status as in a relationship for now. We decided to keep limited contact as we did when we were first getting to know each other online - a few small texts here and there, spaced out over a few days, mentioning good news or something we are both interested in (he even said that he stumbled across things online during our brief separation, and thought: "I wish I could tell her about this.") and if we catch one another online then maybe a short conversation. Nothing too much.

However, he was earnest about getting my stuff out of the apartment, but told me again and again to not take this as a bad sign. He just wanted to make the apartment feel like his without all my stuff being around, but at the same time was open to keeping a few small things of mine in the closet rather then force me to take everything absolutely at once. Mostly, he just wanted my furniture out of the way so that he knew what he had to replace, but said he would still keep one or two pictures around. I was uncertain how to take this information, but I was just open to hearing him out about it. What really broke my heart is how insistent he was about getting the apartment key on Friday, even though he said he knew that I wasn't going to pull a stunt like I did before (running over to the apt without notice), but just because it'd make him feel more comfortable since he's "living alone" now.

Even when he mentioned some of the things he wanted me to take right away on Friday, it was all for very considerate reasons - like taking the TV due to the fact that my parents might want it for my grandma's room, or my favorite wolf blanket due to the often changing temp conditions in my old house. I thought that was quite nice of him. So, I said that we would arrange to meet up for me to get more clothes as well as these things, and then if he feels open to it we could perhaps get coffee or something. I told him that I wasn't going to push the I love yous or I miss yous on him, and I was going to cease from trying to push physical affection that isn't appropriate for the stage we are in now. He said that he appreciated that. He said that he felt our problems were salvageable - nobody cheated or anything like that, and he truly felt like I was capable of making the changes he felt were necessary for continuing our relationship. We ended the conversation on a positive note, and both stated that we were glad to hear from each other. I think this is a good sign that things will truly work out for the best.

What do you all think? Do you think his insistence on me moving my stuff out so quickly and only keep a "few" pictures of us around is a sign that this is just a very soft break-up?

In my opinion, he is letting your down easy and is trying to be a gentleman about it. If, you were to do nothing for a year and come back and read what you've written here, you'd realize that today you are grasping at straws. Keep your own head about this, look at it analytically and not emotionally (I know it's hard to do). He is asking you to take all your stuff out not for considerate reasons, but because he doesn't want it left in his place. This is all very clear and obvious. Sorry to burst your bubble here, but I think you should be realistic and plan for your own future not plan for a future with the two of you. If you do get back together as a couple, I wish you well and for your sake I truly hope that happens. If doesn't happen though, I hope you have a soft place to land.
That which we forget may as well never really happened.

I mean, nobody here has taken a relationship break for a little while to re-evaluate everything? I don't understand why it is so unhealthy to get a new perspective on things. I'm sure there are a lot of couples who have taken a break like this before, right? I don't believe he wants me out of his life entirely, because it's not like he wants ALL my stuff out - just the big stuff, understandably - he's willing to keep some stuff around, and he even mentioned reconsidering cohabitation in a year (psht, no)! Why is it so bad to get some space from one another? I think we're communicating very openly and honestly at this point, and he's the one who mentioned feeling optimistic, so... I really don't think he'd string me along if he still felt certain that it wasn't even worth a shot. I don't understand why everyone here is so concrete in their judgment that this is a no-go? Everyone who knows of us in real life - family and friends - all believe that we have a real shot at this.

I don't think we're being concrete that this is a no-go, but you did ask for our opinions and each and everyone one of us has a different way of looking at this.

In the end, it's your life and your decision you're gonna have to live with. Look at these posts objectively, take what feels good for you and leave the rest. That's all!

We're definitely not aware of everything, but I guess you knew that when you first posted.

Just another point of view and hope you'll see it as such. Take care!

I know I'm appearing very defensive to everyone here, and that is because I still have a lot riding on this. There are a lot of feelings involved, so please forgive me if I seem antagonistic. I really do appreciate what everyone is saying here, and it is helping me think logically. However, I'm just replying from an emotional place so that I can get those feelings and doubts out of the way in order to digest things more logically afterwards. Maybe.

The relationship was actually quite fantastic for a really, really long time. Things only started going downhill recently, because I became very complacent with our arrangement - his parents were helping us out financially, so I had this doting boyfriend who never spoke up about feeling burdened by all the new found responsibilities of apartment living on-top of everything else, and it just became too much. He felt like I wasn't in the right place emotionally to be able to handle what he was thinking/feeling, and obviously that was true. We still wildly enjoy one another's company - when we were actually spending time together, things were fantastic. He is being very critical of me now, because that's half the point of this break is he -was not- happy. Listing the reasons why is half the battle, having me understand them thoroughly is the rest... And I get it all. I get everything that he's saying. What he wants for me is what I wanted for myself all this time, but felt too overwhelmed to accomplish.

He's a very sweet, considerate guy who doesn't play mind games. He's not manipulative, vindictive, or the type to wish ill on anyone - that's why I don't think he is being dishonest about wanting to make things work. When things are in a better place for us both emotionally (I truly feel he was suffering from some depression symptoms as well), then I think we'll find ourselves remembering all the reasons why we worked so well for as long as we did. I think I was just immature enough to go - doh, been three years, no longer have to work at this - and that's not true even if you've been together a lifetime already.

After all, I was the one who suggested that I move out of the apartment. It was my idea originally, and he was actually against it for a short period before thinking over and realizing it was for the best. I am very dependent upon the relationship for my happiness, but I feel like I can make active strides towards independence without giving up entirely on our relationship. If he said he was willing to work on things with me with a little space and new boundaries, then I think that's fine. I do feel like he doesn't completely understand what I'm going through with my depression and everything else, so I was suggesting bringing up the idea of couple's counseling (or maybe just attending a session or two with me) a little later on down the road. I think everyone is being kind of harsh on him for how he's reacting, but you have to keep in mind that he's been supporting me in a lot of ways for months now without complaint - things just built up out of control. I do realize that from this point forward things will always be different, and we'll have to be proactive about not falling into old relationship patterns that have obviously lead us here. However, I already feel a lot different then I felt for the majority of these last few months, and I think this space/break was exactly what we needed to get our heads back on straight.

I sincerely think your both good people with different issues in your lives and trying to deal with it all.
Remember, even after a lifetime you'll still be trying to figure some things out about your partner. (and him about you)
That's just the way it is, but it's also part of the growing together process.

Sure you're on the good road so, keep it up and I wish you the best!
