Actually, effy, I am not a golfer - that was my first time playing. I enjoyed it tho, quite a bit more than I imagined I ever would, and decided I'd add it to my list of things to explore & enjoy. I already bought a few used, but decent clubs to use until I decide if I'll stick with it long enough to invest in the expensive equipment that's necessary to do really well. And I found a driving range just a couple minutes from my home, and I intend to continue practicing! 
lol Maybe THAT was my lesson, my takeaway from this experience! (That golf really is cool!)
And effy, to be clear, in those follow-up messages I did reiterate my enjoyment of the evening & looking fwd to next time, I just didn't make any more personal appearance compliments. But you're on point - sometimes I do wonder if I'm perceived as cold & aloof, when that isn't my internal dialogue at all.
