Being fetishised for suffering mental illness in a relationship

    Hi there,

I'd be interested in starting a conversation about the cliches surrounding the idea that 'troubled women' - women who suffer depression, anxiety, bipolarism - are supposingly great in bed. I feel the assumption is wrong, and some men are using that to fuel their relationship with women they date, diminishing or not understanding their conditions. I'd like to know if anyone has ever found themselves in a situation like that, and how they dealt with it..

I've not heard this before! Interesting....
I'm interested to see the discussion that develops. I will do a bit of reading on it.
Do you have any reason why this is believed? Are you in the US?

      Great topic!

I have heard this before. "Crazy women are wild in the sack," or some variation of that. I don't think it's just women, though. Some women find "bad boys" sexually exciting. What they mean by "bad boy" may vary, but some of it is probably dealing with mentally ill men - or at least men who have personality traits that are just below the threshold of clinical.

There was a program on NPR a couple of years ago dealing with abusive mates. There was a woman and a man on the show who had been with people who were abusive and they both talked about how great the sex was and how the pleasure added another layer to the difficulty of breaking free. Abusive does not mean mentally ill, but they often go hand in hand and it makes sense to me that someone with manic energy could give a partner an experience to remember.

I'm not justifying feti****ing people, just keeping it real.

I think there are some people who prefer sexual encounters that lack emotional connection. They are just seeking something quick, animalistic and wild. I've always equated that more with drugs and alcohol than I have with mental illness of some sort, but I guess they could sometimes go hand in hand.

I don't like stereotypes. A woman can be wild in the sack: mental health is irrelevant. Still, it is interesting to read people's thoughts on the subject.
