If your gonna decide to trust him, and give him another shot, then you need to deal from that position with a clean slate, and not make decisions/comments/choices based on what happened, and hope that he doesn't betray your decision to trust him again.
In your example of leaving a spouse with a disease, the answer is no, I wouldn't. But if after years of working with her, her trying and getting clean, and going back to the bottle, and getting clean and going back to the bottle, then it's very clear to me that it's not an issue of disease or addiction to be overcome, it's a matter of personal choice to stay where she is in life, and you cannot force someone to WANT to change.
