Thank you both for your replies. We spoke tonight and to be honest I think for now its best we are friends and nothing more while he sorts his head out. We are going to carry on seeing each other but as friends and I also hope this may make him realise what he's missing!

Personally, i think that sounds fishy. You found something that is really, none of your business until he feels comfortable bringing it up to you directly.

Some people go thru bouts of Low Self Esteem or even Depression during their lives. It doesn't always mean Emotional Problem. As Said sometimes it can be Seasonal or even a person that has had a bad relationship or experience and having something good in their life , like you , may make them feel it's not True or lasting.

Show him Yourself, share with him sometime, feelings you have had before with someone who may have made you not feel so good about yourself.
But then let him know, that being with him has uplifted you own feeling, that your Finding each other is a Positive thing in your life.

If he has Good qualities, can Fix things, maybe work on cars or figure out Computers or Do math and keep Books well.
Praise him for the things he does good, Not in a Gushy Fake way, but a " Wow , I sure wish I could do that as well as you do ". " Can you teach me more about it " ?

Then he won't feel it's fake and draw back into himself, but he will know it is a Positive thing that You Appreciate and are willing to be Taught and Share with him .

If he has an Interest, see if you can't help him with it, achieve it... Self Esteem and Self Value and Self Love takes a lot of work for some , actually most of us. But when we have Positive people around us and Positive Feedback and Basic Positive Love and Support. It sure makes it easier to Believe in oneself, believe in others and Believe in Love and that we deserve it ourselves.

I suppose it will teach me not to be kind and tidy up his flat in future.

I haven't brought it up, I just gave him the opportunity to talk to me and open up if HE wanted to. I still haven't mentioned Low self esteem and won't until HE does.

In case it is Seasonal affective disorder , it might pay to get him onto vitamin d3 drops- Google for recommended dosage levels.
Fish oil is always good for mood as well.
