I've been with my boyfriend for over a year now, and we have a strong relationship. However, when I first started dating him, I did something terrible; I flirted with an ex over Facebook. I had no intention of getting back together with this guy. We were just friends. I wasn't even thinking about it when it happened because it was just playful, fun flirting. I didn't mean anything I said. But after a few minutes I stopped myself. I was thinking "Wait...this isn't right. I have a boyfriend and I know he wouldn't be okay with this." So I told him we needed to stop, and as soon as I could meet up with my boyfriend in person, I told him what happened. He was never mad at me for it and forgave me right away.
For the next...I don't know, a really long time, I couldn't get over what I had done. Some people might consider flirting cheating, and others might not. All I know is that I made a mistake. It hit me as hard is it did because I had and still have strong feelings for my boyfriend. We're only in high school, and I didn't think I was going to fall in love with anyone until I was a lot older. I was wrong. If it was any other person, I probably wouldn't have taken it so seriously, but he isn't just anyone. If I could take back what I did, I would.
Recently, I contacted this ex of mine because I needed closure. And I got it. Since then, I haven't brought up the incident with my boyfriend (I used to tell him how much it bothered me all the time). But here's the weird thing, and I think it has to do with my past. I've always been an over-thinker and I get paranoid very easily. For some reason, I'm afraid that I've done another terrible thing, something worse, and I just don't remember it, either because I was drunk or I blocked it from my memory. I don't drink. And if I did cheat on him, wouldn't I remember it and feel even worse than I did about flirting? I mean, if flirting with another guy did this to me, you'd think that something like a kiss or a one-night stand would really tear me up.
I don't think I've done anything. I think I'm just paranoid because I don't want to mess up again. I love this boy to death and he doesn't deserve to get hurt. There have been times where I've actually had to browse through my activity feed on Facebook to reassure myself that everything is okay (it helps me because I can associate things that have happened to me with my statuses, if that makes sense).
I know this whole thing is bizarre, and it sounds ridiculous, but I don't know what to do. Why am I such a paranoid person? Why am I paranoid about this when my boyfriend was never upset with me in the first place? What can I do to make myself feel better and stop over-thinking everything? I don't think it's normal to feel afraid or guilty over something that hasn't and never will happen. Please help me.
I'm glad you aren't in that relationship anymore.
