Why are people so intolerant of opinions that go against the majority?

I happened to say on Facebook that a remake of a legendary film-maker's movie was way, way better than the original one. I said that the original was over-hyped and I didn't really see anything special in it. And scores of people pounced on me from all ends with scathing personal attacks, saying I've no sense of aesthetics and stuff, and that its people like me because of whom trashy films are hits. I fought them off, but its deeply disturbed me. WTF is wrong with the world? Is it a crime to have an opinion that goes against the grain?

People can take all sorts of things personally - sports teams, movies, books, cars, political parties, etc. Somehow these things get wrapped up in their self worth. If the original "Kung Fu series" was very important to you when you were growing up, then a remake will seem all **wrong** in a really jarring way. When someone else doesn't recognize this "wrongness", it causes frustration.

Also, online communication looses a lot of the nuances that you have in face to face conversations. People miss all the clues that the person they are talking to is really getting upset, not just engaging in amusing banter.

All that said, I wish people would be more polite online.

A lot of people cannot win a debate on principles or even hold their ground, so they resort to ad hominem attacks. It is a clear sign that they are out of quality arguments. Just remember the Mark Twain quote: "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
        ...
Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?

From a speech by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775 at St. John's Church, Richmond, Virginia

People enjoy destroying someone's thoughts so they can "own" their own thoughts and for the most count, they laugh at doing it.

You are going to let those types win? You are if you are feeling down about it.

To me, facebook is a place where I get to see what my kids are doing What my immediate and not so immediate family are doing and my friends. ****ed if I am going to allow outsiders into "my world". CW however, will via a Forum..

So, if you have received such scathing attacks, from people you don't know, change your settings so only your true friends and family can read your comments and you theirs, after all it is those people that truly know you and respect your own opinions.

*Jns: I love that quote. I should've just thrown something like that in their faces instead of bothering to go all out and trying to get them to argue with logic. Going down to their levels can be emotionally exhausting, its got to me.

CW: Yeah, agreed. I'd do that from now onwards. Though this has delivered quite a severe blow to the lofty principles of "fearless individualism" that I prided myself on possessing, I guess. :P
