Really at a loss as to what to do...

    Hi everyone.
This is quite a long story, so I will say thanks in advance for reading through till the end.

I met this guy, I will call him O, about 3 years ago. We had a fwb relationship, till things eventually cooled off and he got into a relationship, but we have always stayed in touch and met up for coffee etc.

I always knew in the back of my mind that we weren't "friends", and that he only kept me around incase his relationship ended and he wanted sex. However, he would do things that would make me question this eg he rang me up and asked me to go round and as he opened the door he burst into tears. He was having problems in his relationship and we sat and spoke for a good few hours and he thanked me for being there for him. I felt quite flattered that he had felt comfortable enough to cry in front of me, and that I had been the one he thought of picking up the phone too. I then always thought "maybe he does see me as a proper friend". He would also go on trips away with work and bring me little gifts back, but then he would ruin it by never wishing me happy birthday, things like that etc. which again brought me back to the thinking of "I'm just his shag piece".

He broke up with his girlfriend, and quite soon after got into another relationship.

Whenever I would see him he would constantly be moaning about her and asking my advice on what he should do.

She is very possessive over him and has a real problem with him having female friends. She is extremely jealous and they have had many an argument about how her jealously is killing their relationship.

We continued to text every now and then until one day I got a phone call and it was his girlfriend, asking me "what do you want with my boyfriend!!?" And to "leave them alone"

I got in touch with my friend and told him that it was best we no longer had any contact as it wasn't fair I was being harassed by his girlfriend and was obviously upsetting her. He said that he didn't want to stop speaking and that he would have a word with her about her behaviour and try make her see sense.

Needless to say this didn't work.

The phone calls, texts etc still came, to the point where she was threatening to come to my place or work or my home to "speak to me".

Now, if any of our conversations had been flirtatious in anyway, then I could understand her, but it was normal conversation, a quick exchange of texts every few weeks.

It began to make me wonder what he was actually telling her, and that if he had any respect for me, he would be telling her to back off.

It reached boiling point, where I eventually had to contact the police.

I was advised to no longer be in touch with my "friend" O, and as for the gf K, she was served with a caution letter. Not really anything too serious, but I knew it would unnerve her, and hopefully bring all the drama to an end.

This was in August, and myself and O stopped talking after this.

In October, without going into too much detail, I became very poorly with septicimia and was in the intensive care unit, I was told it was 50/50 that I would survive. I had seen on Facebook that he was now single, so I texted my friend O to try and make amends, given the situation of my health. He responded saying that he was sorry to here that I was poorly and that if there was anything he could do to help, to let him know. I thanked him and it was left at that.

Luckily my condition improved and eventually I was discharged. As I been off work now for 2 months, I am climbing the walls with bored so decided to have a clear out of some stuff. I came across some books of O's, and as the air had seemed to have been cleared, I text him to see what he wanted me to do with them. He responded and told me to keep them. Within 30 secs the ex girlfriend K, who was now clearly back on the scene began to start texting me with her "warnings" again. I didn't respond to her, nor did I send O anything else.

I would like to be able to stay in contact with O, but I just don't see how I am going to be able to do this with K knocking around. Any text I send him, she will always be there, and then send me something from her. Had I have known they were back together I wouldn't have even bothered texting him at all.

It upsets me, as he just allows her to do this.

I know deep down he has no respect for me, and probably doesn't care whether we speak again or not as he has K, and as miserable as her jealous behaviour makes him, she is all he wants.

It just makes me all a bit fed up x

Read your own last paragraph again and final sentence. Leave him alone. It upsets you, so why keep trying to maintain a friendship with someone who doesn't feel the same?

It's not fair, but sometimes it's best just to cut your losses rather than fight costly battles. Unless this guy really means that much to you ....is there more going on here than just friendship?

No, just friends. I have always been very fond of him though, and always thought that if we stopped having each other in our lives then it would be a mutual decision or that we would just lose contact.

I am extremely stubborn, and it kills me that I am being told what to do by the girlfriend. I don't know if he is of the same opinion for me to "leave us alone" (makes it sound like I've been sending text after text, which I haven't), or if it is just purely her.

If he is of the same opinion, then when I text regarding the books, he shouldn't have replied. And why he replied when K was sat right next to him is beyond me....

When was the last time he initiated contact?

Before it kicked off in August. I get what your trying to say, but what I'm saying is, if he wants nothing to do with me, why text me back??? You would just ignore it, that's what I would do anyway, not offer my help to you

Because he doesn't want to be perceived as a complete jerk for no reply, just in case he ever "needs" you again-you said yourself early in your first post. Some people just handle their business that way.
Really, all your answers are in your own words my dear. I am not trying to be rude, but read your own post.

You want to latch onto those replies as evidence he cares for this friendship but it doesn't necessarily mean that. Take the whole picture here for what it is and leave him behind.

Like you've just said, he wants to be nice incase he ever "needs" me again.

I just don't want to get to a stage where I am happy and done with him to then have him crop back up again

So, you want a sexual relationship? And you're waiting around to be his third choice, 4th or....whenever he runs out of other options?

                    Not at all.

What I'm saying is, so I forget our so called "friendship", and then I move on and forget him. If he WAS to then get back in touch for whatever reason, what am I supposed to do then?
