I have a major crush on a ridiculously attractive guy at my school

There is a guy at my school who I have always secretly been interested in, since I noticed him three months ago, and I have always wanted to approach him in some way.
However, the thing here is... he is very attractive.
    Very very, VERY attractive.
He is probably about 6'4 tall, with large muscles, broad shoulders, amazingly beautiful eyes, perfect lips, irresistible smile --- all of that.
He takes my breath away almost every time I see him, that's how attractive he is.
So he is definitely very used to getting approached and seeing girls flirt with him and smile to him, and I usually see him with different girls, who are clearly flirting with him.
I have tried making eye contact with him myself several times, but I can only hold his gaze for about one second before I become too shy and look away.
I really want to make contact with him, but I am terribly shy of him.
But I also realize that he will most likely be taken by another girl at any moment, if he isn't already taken.
Do you know what I could do that isn't too scary, even if I am really shy?

I've been flirted with, had notes written, and have had women say they like me. The only girl to ever successfully chase me was different from other girls and women in her approach. I never saw her coming. I only knew after she was my girlfriend that she wanted me from the moment she saw me.

We were 14 and she came right up to my best friend and I and introduced herself when her family came for a visit to my mother's fiance's home. She cleverly inserted herself into our conversation and into the rest of our night. She laughed with us, was silly with us, charming, and not openly flirtatious. When we parted company the first time I thought we were friends. I had no clue she liked me. She had gotten my friend's number too. In fact, he was into her more than I was at first.

So, right off the bat, she was different from other girls, friends with me, and friends with my best friend before I even knew she liked me. If any other woman has come at me that way, I haven't noticed it.

Yes, it's probably better to be more special and stand out a bit, hah.
So far I have been checking him out a lot from a distance, then when he notices me I try to hold eye contact with him as long as I can, but then I always end up feeling nervous and get a shy smile on my face and look away.
I believe he might have checked me out a little bit once or twice, or maybe that's just wishful thinking, but I really hope not.

It's very tempting to walk up to him and try to talk to him, then ask him if we can meet some day.
But that might not be that original or interesting to him.
