    Thanks for your story Janine!
I had a mirena inserted last week after the doctor took me off the pill, which I had been on for 19 years on and off to have my kids. Said I was at risk of stroke cause they were causing me migraines.
From the very first day, something in me changed! I became very depressed and anxious and couldn't seem to eat.
Over the next 6 days I had the following:
    Severe depression
    Anxiety
    Fearfulness
    No appetite
    Diarrhea
    Insomnia
    Memory loss
    No concentration
    Crying all the time
    Brain fog
    Suicidal
I just wasn't myself at all. I seriously thought I'd be going to a mental institution!
After 2 days I went back to another dr cause I thought I must have had a stroke. She did all the tests and just said I was anxious and gave me some relaxation techniques.
By day 6 I'd had enough. Booked into my dr and had it removed. He tried to talk me out of it but I wanted it out.
He said I could fall pregnant in 48 hrs as it would be out of my system by then. Wouldn't you know it, by almost 48 hrs my mood did a complete turn around.
Although I now have a flooding period, it has now been 3 days since I had it removed and my brain fog and memory issues are gone. I am starting to eat again. My heart isn't racing and I feel so much calmer.
I can't believe how quickly I changed once it went in and how quickly I changed back once it was out again.

I have since met a few people who have also had bad reactions to them and from all the stories I have read on here, I'm glad I got this evil thing out of me! I wish I'd never listened to my dr!

I will be finding a new one!!

    Mirenas are pure EVIL!!!

I've had my IUD now for almost 8 months. The insertion hurt a lot and I suffered intense cramps for the few 5 days then off and on for the next month but I think the pain was made worse by the fact that I was a virgin. I kept waiting to feel the depression mood swings and lack of interest in sex that my sister in law felt after she had hers put in but they never hit. Since I got the IUD I haven't really noticed any of the side effects the mirena website talked about. The only problem I had with it was when I got married a month later my husband could sometimes feel the strings or the end of the device while we had sex and it was a bit painful for both of us. That only happened a handful of times though and hasn't hurt in the last several months. My guess is that the hormones in it affect people differently which is why it doesnt work for some and works wonderfully for others.

For Bonnie, Kitkat and others - having had both endometriosis and polycystic ovaries I wonder if some of the syptoms being decribed could be down to polycystic ovaries? Worth having it checked out, took many years for me to get both conditions diagnosed.

Am going to GP today to discuss removal of MC after 14 months on it as now have significant breast lumps - luckily fluid filled cysts but having heard head of the research that went into establishing HRT and the causal link with BC talking on Radio 4 am not going to risk it. My verdict on what she said is that it's just not worth mucking around with any synthetic hormones in any way. I'm now 53 and it seems that for some like me who's had breast lumps since 18 (and always 'busy breasts') and not taken the pill since then either it doesn't make sence to fiddle with hormones now, now matter where located, how low or how much reassurance there is. Am concerned will crash back into menopause, heavy bleeding and migraines all of which have been much better on MC but have had other negative effects I think and awful temper outbursts so maybe on balance it's best to stick to what nature throws and cope with that as best as possible. Will research other coils so at least birth control covered. Am coming back as a male anything in the next life!

I have had my Mirena in since December 17, 2012.. I also started my period that day after it was placed in.. It is not March of 2013 nd I still have not stopped my period.. I have had cramps.. Nd several times my period acts as though its gonna stop.. but it doesn't.. I can still feel the strings.. But I'm starting to worry.. They did give me a depo shot before I got the Mirena.. Nd the last time I got the Depo I bled for 10 months straight.. I started taking the pill to regulate my period nd restore the lining of my uterus.. But I haven't gotten the shot since.. I though that could have been the reason I'm still bleeding, but I would have stopped by now with only have had one shot.. Anyone else who can relate nd advice?

Cysts are for sure a complication from it... :/
Tied to it anyway. I couldnt find the exact percentages of people who have complications but I have seen it around a LOT

Heavy Period 2 years after Mirena

I've had my Mirena for 2+ years. I've had some of the basic side effects but nothing of concern until recently. In the past I've had light random periods and spotting almost every day. Starting 2 weeks ago I've had non stop a SUPER heavy period. I don't know if this is the sign of something serious or just part of one of Mirena's crazy side effects. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks for your input.

My daughter in law started taking this, it turned her into a MONSTER, call it hormones or perhaps liken it to the stage in pregnancy that is so often portrayed in movies and series (an episode of Frasier springs to mind).

My daughter in law started being horrible to her kids, her husband but not to one or two friends, it seemed like her whole personality changed. She became much more selfish, my son put up with it for about 5 years, he did his research and asked her to remove it, she declined and and had a new one because she liked not having periods.

She may have got rid of "the curse" but she became the curse to almost everyone, sure she could put on a "nice" voice if she met someone new but it did not take long for her to be aggressive and nasty.

Well we had always been good friends and I kept my distance for the sake of my grandchildren, so after 3 years of separation she finally gets rid of this evil device and she changed AGAIN. It took a while but she slowly returned to the sweet person she once was, sadly it was too late for my son and her to get back together - just too much water under the bridge.

I was talking to her mother about it and she said that it was just not natural to not have periods, all those toxins and other things that get flushed with a period.

So if you doctor is suggesting you get this, ask them whether they or their practice get a payment for enrolling you on this (it usually kicks in at 18 months).

Consider all the negative comments on this thread and find a different solution. Ironically all my daughter in law wanted was to have her tubes tied but the doctor pushed her onto this (probably because of the money they are paid for family planning).

Learn from the mistakes of others!

                      Avoid the Mirina!
I was going to wait until I had read through the entire thread to post what you have basically said. I don't know how women continue to subject themselves to this kind of torture, not to mention the possible risk of infection and death when you think your symptoms are 'normal'. Geez!

Ladies, take a count of the number of positive reviews you've read in this thread and compare it to the bad reviews. Why on earth would you want to do this to yourself?
