Mirena IUD is this safe for me?

I have iron def. anemia. I am 43 yo with three children. Married 22 years. I also smoke and have controlled high blood pressure.

I was told by my GYN, that the Mirena IUD would be a good option for me to slow or stop my periods.

But I am concerned that I am a smoker and have high blood pressure.

I do not want an endo ablation. I want to try the Mirena IUD first. I am scheduled to have it done on Thursday.

The GYN never mentioned anything about my smoking or high blood pressure.

I already know I have to quit smoking.

    Advice? Thank you.

      I know, another Mirena thread

I know there are plenty of threads on IUD's but I have yet to find anyone with my experience. I had it inserted in February 2010 and my period came right on schedule at the end of that month but after that I had nothing. No periods, no spotting, no nothing. It's December now and about 4 or 5 days ago my boyfriend and I had sex and afterward there was some pink spotting. Didn't think much of it until I started to get brown discharge and very light bleeding. I have a few cramps like I'm on my period but I'm very confused since I haven't had it for so long. Has anyone else experienced this? I also have no insurance and no job so I'm really at a loss of what to do.

I can't answer your question, as I posted one of my own about the Mirena, and do not have an answer as of yet. But I am going in tomorrow to have the Mirena IUD inserted. Not for BC reasons, but to hopefully slow my periods.
Looks like that has done that for you so I was glad to read that.
Can you tell me how painful the insertion was? I have three children.
And what about pain afterwards? What should I expect?
I know everyone is different, but I do not like pain. I hate cramps, but I understand that I could have cramps for a very long time after this.
I hope you get an answer to your question.

I was also concerned about the pain when it was inserted I really had no idea what to expect. Since I haven't had any children I didn't know what it felt like to have my cervix dilated. I've heard that if you have had kids it is less painful because your cervix has been dilated. The nurse told me before that the pain was similar to that of contractions during labor. To be perfectly honest, this experience was probably the most painful I've had and the nurse even said I did good because I didn't scream lol But I wouldn't change anything because I have no periods at all and that in itself is worth the max 5 minutes of pain during the insertion. Afterward it's basically just really bad cramps and I felt physically exhausted, as if I had been in labor (although I can only speculate!). The next day I felt great and haven't had any problems since except this odd spot right now. Everyone is different and will experience different things but I would go for it! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I think you should definitely go see the doctor, now! Your periods stopped a month after going on mirena and months later you are suddenly now bleeding and cramping? It sounds like it could have become embedded or perforated your uterus. Which is bad, you could die.

                mirena coil

I had the mirena coil fitted 3 wks ago and am still suffering now, when i had it fitted the pain was so intense I actually passed out, was in agony all that day, and then it faded for a couple of days, but ever since am getting cramps which are really quite painful, I have never been pregnant, so at first put it down to this, as i had been told it may hurt a little more, but am i right to be concerned? Think I will leave it for one more week and see how I go, has anybody been through anything similiar? Any advice appreciated.

I've never had the mirena, but I've heard several women on here talking about it. There are actually some threads with lots of discussion about the mirena that may be helpful to you. You can do a search on this site and the threads will pull up. Having to deal with cramps like that is no fun. That's a sure fire way to keep you from getting pregnant, because I'm sure the last thing on your mind is sex. Hope you can find some helpful information here and make whatever decision is best for you and your body.

Hi, I am 46yrs old, and in early menopause. I was given the Mirena coil to control night sweats and drastic mood swings, plus Premia tablets once a day to protect the uterus from cancer. I have had it about 3 mths now. So, I have NO bleeding, but do get some cramping. It took about 6 weeks for the bleeding to stop. However....I feel so despondent, have no sex drive, and often am teary. Moods are quite low constantly, but I am not depressed. just have no interest in ANYTHING. I am wondering if this is the coil, or me? I was having HUGE night sweats prior to the coil, and having to go to the loo about 3-4 times a night - so very little quality sleep prior to getting it. But now my general tiredness (all the time) and lack of motivation and drive and enjoyment of anything is really getting me down - as i am usually a full bore bubbly kind of person. Would welcome some feed back from other women who use this as hormone replacement
