I just started having these pains about a week and a half ago. It is a sharp, knife-like pain in the vagina/cervix and on the pubic bone or directly to the left or right of it. Until today, the pains would come and go between 2 or 3 times a day and last between 2 and 10 minutes. Today, I had such intense, long term pain when I was at work that I was stuck at my desk and couldn't move for about an hour. A co-worker gave me 3 Aleve and I finally was able to get out of the chair but another co-worker had to drive me home.

I have the Mirena IUD (due to excessive menstrual bleeding which caused severe anemia) but I have had it for a couple of years with no problems until now. The pain that I am now experiencing made me believe that my body was trying to expel the IUD or that it had ruptured something. Anyway, my doctor got me in today for an emergency visit and all is well with the IUD. The doctor believes I may have ovarian cysts so I have a vaginal ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow. In googling the symptoms of ovarian cysts, I believe that the doctor is right on target. (She also gave me Vicodin for the pain.)

The doctor also explained that the pain from ovarian cysts can travel, which would explain why I am having pain in various areas around my pubic bone.

To those of you who are struggling with this, find a GOOD gynecologist who understands how intense this pain is and who will get you diagnosed once and for all. If the doctor can't diagnose anything with a pelvic exam, he should be ordering an ultrasound.

Have you seen a doctor about this? Pain from your body is always a sign, ladies - a sign you shouldn't ignore. You may want to talk to your doc so you can get an ultrasound. You may have fibroids or cysts causing the issue; and you want to make sure you don't have a condition threatening your health. Better safe than sorry.

I might have an answer!! Here's my story: I just got an appendectomy on June 6. About 4 days after surgery, this stabbing pain started in my pelvic area. I've been so lovingly referring to it as "vagina lightning" because it feels nothing short of electric shocks shooting through my vag. At times it's through my labia, other times its closer to the right side of my pelvis (note: my appendix was on the left side. I'm a medical mystery I guess), and other times closer to my belly button or inside my vag. The pain was manageable although it did stop me dead in my tracks and make me gasp when it hit. But on June 18 I got the Mirena IUD anyway. My vag lightning only got worse.

I went to the dr, and she did a pelvic exam and felt my ovaries. She couldn't tell anything so she had me get an ultrasound. At least a thousand dollars later (I'm guessing) and I find out that its just my body reacting to the surgery and that it should quiet down in a few more weeks. If it doesn't, call and come back in.

Good to know its not ovarian cysts, but frustrating to be told that its "nothing." It's most definitely something! This pain is not in my mind, as you girls showed me. Anyway, hope this alleviated some of your concerns if you have similar experiences.
