I have a friend who has been on the pill for over 10 years now and she doesn't plan to get off until she is married. She's only 24 years old. So, could be a while longer. She can't get mirena because she is still single and finding a doc to put one in someone who is not married is super hard. Even if you've been with someone for years. -
I had my mirena put in when I was 20 years old, I was single with no children. My doctor put it in because of my endometriosis and terrible periods and pain. I had a mirena for 12 years (3 mirenas in total) and had mine removed 3 months ago (14 Jan 2011 - also stopped my anti-depressants the same day). Whilst on the Mirena I didn't have a period for the entire 12 years, which was bliss.
I got it removed because of all the suspected side effects (serious depression, massive weight gain, hormonal hairs, sensitive body and aches and pains etc). The doctors kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me (as per medical and blood tests) so after reading these forums, i thought I would get the mirena removed to see how i felt after that.
3 months after having it removed, I feel exactly how i felt on the mirena and I haven't had a period yet.... it's been 3 months and I still haven't had a period since having it removed.
Can anyone out there who has had their mirena removed tell me how long it was before they felt back to normal and got their period?? also, if they did or are feeling normal again.Comment

Hi, I had my mirena fitted in December 2010 to reduce my bleeding. It did the job but since having this coil I have slowly been feeling that I am having a breakdown. Depressed, anxious, cant cope with the kids, needing to escape and really tired and not wanting to do anything (Basically everything was the complete opposite of what I am normally like). My husband and I agreed that it was time to go and see the doctor to have it removed.
In answer to your question, without speaking to the doctor yet. I assume 6 months. They say when you have it fitted you need to give it 6 months to work, perhaps the same when you have it taken out?Comment

mirena coil
Hi I'm new to this so I hope I'm doing it right I had the coil fitted after I had my son in 2003 because I was bleeding very badly and they said it was a very good contraceptive. I began feeling anxious and depressed after about 3mths but the doctors said it was post natal depression and I would be fine. It gradually got worse and worse until I was so bad I couldn't be near my son and I was so nasty and bad tempered. The next doctor gave me a pill called citalopram an anti depressent and I felt a little better but was still having very down days and eeven weeks. I still have the coil but someone said my feelings might be connected then I found this blog and think I will have to have it removed to see what happens. Thanks to all you ladies on here there may be hope that I'm not crazy as I was a happy happy person before and I have a fantastic life so there could be a light. I have had the mirena coil for two years and was very healthy prior to this. Was happy with the effects (after the first three months - the bleeding, etc.) and no longer have periods at all. But the weight gain! I was a size 12 and am now verging on a 16. I have put on 20lbs in this time and yes, I eat healthily and exercise. I get very bloated and started to get abdominal pains. The weight gain, pains and bloating led the doctor to send me for a scan, which found I now have ovarian cysts which bleed. I didn't have them before. I have also been suffering from a terriible, itchy rash on my face for the last 18 months which was attributed to an allergy, but nothing they gave me other than steroids cleared it; it always came back. Now it has dawned that this may also be a side effect of the coil too. I am now having the mirena removed and as I am now in my 40's and have had my children, have opted for sterilisation instead!Comment

hi there everyone, i will start with my story before the mirena coil, after having my only child i suffered horrible period pain which would sometimes make me collapse, the pain was that bad, i have a high pain threshold as i had my only child with hardly any pain relef till last minute, these pains were **** and was extremely heavy each time, after years of going to the doctor for help to no avail, i saw a nurse and she said i should not have suffered for all that time without being checked, i was sent to the local hospital for tests and it turned out my womb had collapsed and had endometriosis, had 3 ops and during the main op was told as i was going into surgery that the mirena coil was going to be used as it would stop the endometriosis coming back and would be good for my heavy periods, had no talk with the doctor about the pros and cons of it as id never heard of this coil before, well after the ops i was in extreme pain and heavy bleeding, which could have been due to the ops themselves, a few months before my surgery i lost my father and that is what made me concentrate on my health but the following 5 years had been **** for me, all my symptoms i put down to losing my father but reserching the coil im begining to see a horrible pattern and i fell so mad that the last 5 years may have been different had i had the choice to have the coil or not, here are a few of my symptoms -
migraines
light aversion
major panic attacks
dizzy spells
not wanting to leave the house
numbness in my legs
back pain
insomnia
hair loss
ache
no sex drive what so ever
all which ive never suffered with beforeComment

Hi I am 23 no children and have had the mirena coil for 3 months now so thought I would share my experience. I got the mirena as it was my last contraceptive option due to a brain condition I have and my partner and I hate condoms. So my experience getting it in was pain free but mainly because I was used to bad cramps in the past. For the first three weeks I spotted kind of a brown discharge and had some cramping then I had a two week break and got a period for two weeks with awful cramps then a three week break and another two week period but no cramps this time. I think my body is now adjusting to the coil so hopefully the length of time I have my period will get less and less. I did gain about 6 pounds the first month but I am back on track with my weight loss now so fingers crossed this months period is successful but over all my experience had been good also I've noticed a big increase in my sex drive. Hope this helps people thinkin of getting it because I was terrified but it was not half as bad as in my head.Comment

Could still be a combination.

I recognise a lot of your symptoms both from stress of losing my mum and dad within 2 years of each other and also, currently, just having had the Mirena fitted for the second time. First time seemed fine. This time headaches everyday, wooziness, all my arthritis agravated, not wanting to go out, hair loss - plus a feeling of 'depression' though I don't think I am, tiredness, nausea, severe lower abdominal pain (only happened for one day but I was weak at the knees and shaking from it), bloating. My doctor has just told me it has nothing to do with the coil, not enough hormones on it to cause this, but other people on this forum seem to be saying diffently. She has given me a hormone replacement pill to try counter it, although if it doesn't help she will remove the coil for me but I do know it can take time to work properly. My first one didn't give me any problem at all.
It may be a combination of too much in one go ... you had a child (mine changed my sex life for some time which is usual), losing your father is a big thing especially after going through all that pain and worry with the operations. I wouldn't put all this just down to the coil but you should have had a consent form and been taken through all the problems the coil could cause before insertion. I was, both this time and 6/7 years ago when I had my first one in.
Hope that helps. Stay strong.Comment
