This is my first time posting. I had the marina coil fitted 5 yrs ago i found it very good for the purpose that it was fitted. I had severe period pains all down my legs from my lower back, i had gone to see about getting my womb removed. I was talked into getting the marina fitted as last resort. it worked perfectly but i did go from 8 and half stone to 10 and half stone but was told marina doesn't do that. I thought i just got the middle age spread i'm 50, after reading the posts i'm not so sure, i recently had the coil refitted and am suffering pains all down both legs they are keeping me awake every night, i have strange little pains in my abdomen and my body just does not feel right, my good feeling seems to be gone i feel uptight and agitated all the time and on a very short fuse and it all seems to have started from the time the marina was refitted. I was wondering has anyone come across leg pain related to the marina coil, i'm going to find out about getting it taken out i think.

      Mirena coil and its faults

Im 31 and had the coil fitted aout 2 years ago the plus side to it was a stop to my periods !!! But i have put on at least a stone in weight around my middle and could pass for pregnant .

I have through out my time with the mirena coil felt down, tierd no get up and go and can sleep for hours on end and im not intersted in sex at all . This is also because over the 2 years i have had the coil i have had a smell that is not pleasant and a dishcharge and also bleed at times after intercourse. The the last 6 months its been constant the smell and i attended a walk in clinic at the STI clinic , to which my results came back negative for sti's but i had bacterial vaginosis which is a yeast infection the same family as thrush i took the course of antibiotics as directed but 1 month later i can smell it again sorry to be crude .

I have spoke to people about this and another friend of mine has had this problem and since removing it she has returned to normall ( smelling lol ) so i need to find the time to have it taken out and hopefully loose some of this weight as in my photos you can see the drastic change .

Does anyone know how easy it is to remove and is it painfull as i had mine put in after surgery and was under when it was done . xxx would appreciate any comments xx

        hi everyone
my gp advised the marina coil to me due to irregular and heavy periods. i have got an appointment for a hysteroscopy in 3 weeks time. she said they could fit the coil at the same time if i decide to go with it. after reading all the comments i am not sure what to do. i dont really want a coil as i have been sterilized. when my gp talked about the coil she only pointed out the positive sides but now i am relly confused. any advice???

              Snap!

After reading all of the posts, i was amazed how many of them could have been written by myself.

I am on my 3rd Merina. I have had them in for 12 years (currently on my 2nd year of merina 3).

The reason i was put on the merina was due to endometriosis and severely painful periods. As a teen, i was close to anemic and would almost pass out from bleeding and the pain.

A week or two ago i started having some really bad cramps and just for the fun of it i googled merina side effects and i was stunned at what I saw. I had never thought that there could be a correlation between how horrible i had been feeling for the last few years.

I am on anti-depressants which do not work and I am constantly trying new ones to find a fit. I am exhausted all the time, i have gained a huge amount of weight over the past 5 years (even when i eat well and exercise, i can't lose weight), i have horrible hormonal hairs on my chin (i had 11 sessions of laser hair removal and they kept growing back quicker than ever), a constant uninterest in anything including life, suicidal thoughts, tender breasts, belly etc, bloated belly all the time, severe gas, heartburn, reflux, short temper, grumpy, i basically become a hermit/recluse and just can't handle people. The list goes on. I just have no interest in anything or any passion in anything. I feel about as attractive as tampon.

I was put on anti-depressants about 4 years ago after many blood tests and me begging Doctors to tell me 'what the is wrong with me?'. I haven't felt any sort of joy or contentment in almost 5 years. People just do not understand and tell me do this or do that and you will feel better but they can't understand how low i feel and how hopeless i feel 24/7.

I have an appointment to have my merina removed next Friday. I am terrified that it will hurt. 2 of mine were put in under anesthetics and the one time i had it put in while i was awake, i screamed and cried. It was agony. I am hoping and praying that once i have the merina removed that i will start to feel ok and after a while i will finally feel like a normal girl.

I would love to hear from anyone who has had their merina removed and how they feel now, side effects gone etc.

              Bonnie

I had alot of problems when I got my first mirean inserted 8 years ago. I had many months of very painful backache and was on the brink of taking it out after about 3months. my doctors advised me that i should leave it in until about 5 months and if no change, have it removed. I am please to say that my mirena did eventually settle down and i am now on my second. I am extremely happy with the mirena. i don't have to worry about taking pills or anitibiotics interfering with the use of the pill. the only thing i will say is that my breasts are extremely tender for about 2 weeks of each month and i only end up getting a period of one day, extremely annoying, all that tenderness for one day. I had my first mirena removed in 2005 with absolutely no problems at all. it only took 2minutes and a large cough. i had no problems with pain at all. my only hope is that the next one will be the same, can't see why not. I think it depends on the doc we get, whether experienced or only holdling little. at the end of the day, I would much prefer to have 5 minutes discomfort in getting it out than an unwanted pregnancy. I Hope that answers your question snap. good luck with getting it out. i think you will be fine. there is no need to be panicking at all, i promise. when it is all done, u will wonder what u were worring about.

Kinds regards and all the best.

                  Mirena Coil

For the entire 12 years I had my Mirenas, I have never had a period. Of course when I got each one removed and replaced (every 5 years) I bled for a few days and had really bad tummy cramping.

I was really lucky, the most i have had during the 12 years is to have the occasional breakthrough bleed which was some brown discharge for a few hours once or twice a year. Not what I would call bleeding. I do still get cramps occasionally (when I guess my period would have been due if i got one).

On one hand, i really love the Mirena and how i don't have to worry about the dreaded period as mine were agony. But on the other hand, I am praying that when i get it removed next Friday that all of my side effects listed in my email above will start to alleviate and eventually i will feel like a normal person and not some crazy person who is so messed up she shuts herself away from life. I don't know if my side effects are from the Mirena but after years of all this going on with my body and blood tests after blood tests and the doctors telling me i am fine when i know this isn't the way a fine person should feel.

I will let you all know how things go after I have it removed. I have started to ween myself off of my anti-depressant Mirtazapine (which isn't helping anyway, it just makes me get fatter and fatter).

Like every time before, when i had my thyroid tested, hormones tested etc i pray that i find that everything i went through over the past 6-9 years has just been some horrible side effect to the Mirena because a person doesn't deserve to live like this.

                  Wish me luck.

                  Bonnie

Hi, I am 46yrs old, and in early menopause. I was given the Mirena coil to control night sweats and drastic mood swings, plus Premia tablets once a day to protect the uterus from cancer. I have had it about 3 mths now. So, I have NO bleeding, but do get some cramping. It took about 6 weeks for the bleeding to stop. However....I feel so despondent, have no sex drive, and often am teary. Moods are quite low constantly, but I am not depressed. just have no interest in ANYTHING. I am wondering if this is the coil, or me? I was having HUGE night sweats prior to the coil, and having to go to the loo about 3-4 times a night - so very little quality sleep prior to getting it. But now my general tiredness (all the time) and lack of motivation and drive and enjoyment of anything is really getting me down - as i am usually a full bore bubbly kind of person. Would welcome some feed back from other women who use this as hormone replacement
