I got an email last night and there was a link in it that I followed. It was on a writing forum and there was a post written out. The character names were mine and my husband's and it was an intimate scene in this story. I tried to email back but I wasn't able to. no idea who the person was. What should I do? It's very strange...

That's weird. What did your husband say? Were there any real life details that related the story to you besides your names? Can you find out any information on who wrote the story or go to the administrators on the site?

I think I'd go to the police to report it just in case. That's disturbing.

I'd not only be concerned about the personal info in the story, but also that someone has infected you with a virus.<br />
Be very careful. I'd check all your security and take some precautions if I were you.

Now that you've clicked on the link, you should definetely have someone check your computer.
Never click, when you don't know the person. The internet is a wide world and there's alot of
bad going on we don't even realise. Be careful! Hope it turns out to be a prank!

We had some weird things happen a couple years ago to us that we thought was a prank too... I wouldn't have clicked on the link but there was a message written in the body of the email too that didn't feel like a spam or something. It started off as Hey Maddy how are you... And then got weirder from there. That was why I ended up clicking it. I don't think anything in the writing was real but I mean I don't know. There wasn't anything overly specific.

I didn't tell Ron right away but after I came on here I told him and then he read it. We tried to figure out anything about the email and the writer on the forum but the email was dead. Do you think it would be overreacting to go to the police?

I don't think it's overreacting to speak with them to see what they have to say. <br />
It may be worthwhile to search scams and ploys used to gain access to private computers.<br />

Personally I'd lock down bank accounts and other important things accessed by that computer. Change passwords and check for suspicious activity on all those accounts for the next few weeks at least.<br />

This would be an odd way to harrass someone. It's likely a fishing expedition for info and access to your personal info.

Yeah that freaks me out... I hope bank account info and stuff isn't still traceable after clearing it out... Maybe I can do a full system restore and just back up the files/pictures...

I'm just spooked because they used our names as Madison and Ronnie and there were references to a "beach town" - we live in Cape Cod.

I had a scare awhile back and chose to freeze my credit. <br />
If I were you I'd take the precautions and be watchful for awhile. There are a lot of potential things to go wrong. <br />
In the future don't ever click a link or open anything sent by someone you don't know personally.

Yeah I know... The link was to a forum like this one... I really hope there's no way our info could be taken... The person in the forum called themselves Maxamillion... Gives me goosebumps
