    Why am I bleeding?

I lost my virginity about three nights ago and have been bleeding very heavily since then. I'm not sure but I don't think he pulled out and he didn't use a condom. I have been on birth control for about three months and was not able to access my birth control the night after having sex but took two pills the next day, about 19 hours after I was supposed to take the next one. I started bleeding bright red blood soon after having sex, which I assumed was from my hymen stretching, but soon began bleeding abnormally heavily and have have not stopped bleeding since then. My periods were like this before I got on birth control but became much lighter when I started taking it. Am I just having a really heavy period? Could this be a sign of an std? I'm pretty sure miscarriages don't happen this early but could they? Can having sex have triggered my period?

Welcome to WH! I believe that doubling up on your pills after missing most of a day could be causing your bleeding. Then again, it may be related to first time intercourse. Comments? Claret, atskitty2, Ashlee T.

It depends on your definition of heavy. Does it look like a period or does it look like the bright red bleeding you had right after intercourse? If it is bright red and very thin, I would probably be more concerned that something was torn and bleeding. If it is thicker, darker red, more like a period consistency I would think that I had just thrown my hormones a bit out of whack. The pill can definitely do that, and especially if you don't take them like you're supposed to. You did the right thing by taking two the next day, but it could've definitely been a big wham to your hormones. Also depends on where in your cycle you were when this happened.

Doesn't sound at all like an STD. Definitely not a miscarriage. If you've been on the pill for 3 months, you should not be ovulating at all, assuming you're taking them properly and assuming you are not taking an antibiotic that counteracts the birth control. However, even if you were ovulating, it would take longer than 3 nights for the sperm to even make its way to your egg, fertilize it and the fertilized egg implant into your uterus. That process can take up to 2 weeks from the date of the intercourse. I would not consider pregnancy a threat at this point.
