A friend of mine comes for a very conservative Hispanic family. She is several years older than you are, but her family started to pressure her to marry and have children already when she was only in her early 20s. She has several brothers and sisters, and of course her sisters have been receiving the same treatment since the same age, but apparently nobody cares when and even if her brothers ever marry.
Unfortunately for her, things got worse over time not only because she got older and remained unmarried but also because her younger sisters started to get married and have babies. Her family therefore started to consider her a failure and, to save the family 'honor,' began setting her up on blind dates without her prior approval. She went on several of the dates just to keep everyone happy, even though she was not even interested in a relationship at the time.
What ended up happening was that she couldn't take the pressure anymore, and she decided that it would be easier to just fake a relationship and eventually a marriage than to fight off her family. She started going steady with one of her dates, the dude popped the question after a few months, and they got married just a few weeks after that. Several of us tried to talk sense into her beforehand, but she explained that she would rather be in a loveless marriage than in the pressure cooker formed by her family.
Of course the big question at the wedding reception was.. yep.. 'So when can we expect the first baby from you two?' I'm sure the big question right after the first baby will be 'So when can we expect the next baby from you two?' It seems her family thinks that meaning of life for a woman is to be a baby factory. I think it's sad and tragic.Comment
