A ring doesn't symbolize marriage everywhere.

As for the potential commitment issues, well, that's a whole separate problem from just whether or not to wear a ring. If he doesn't want to wear a ring because he doesn't want to show a public union, then there is more to deal with.

If it strictly comes down to the man doesn't want to wear a ring, but would be ok with another form of symbolism, then that should be explored, IMO.

She said: "It doesn't have to be a ring. I want it to be a ring. But if he doesn't want nothing at all or gives me attitude over the whole topic then that's when we start arguing again. I'm going to ask him if there's anything else he rather have instead..."

I agree KM - I think I was the first to suggest that it could be something else. I could be off-base, but I think it's a commitment issue they have, not a symbol issue. I hope she comes back soon to update us.
Nice to see you around here more often KM!

I'm on the same page as atskitty Given this (posted in the Husband/Fiance section) and the other thread where she refers to him as "spouse", I think this is a commitment issue. I think she feels insecure about his and is looking for some gesture to help her feel better. Yet he outright refuses.

It's presumptuous of me, but I'd speculate that the decision not to marry was not really mutual. And the ring is just one of many of her attempts to get him to commit.

Hopefully the therapist will help them get to the truth.

I had the same sense initially Pollon, but as you say, it's speculative.

I think it is all pretty straightforward.
He does not want to wear a ring. He has been honest about this from the start.
She wants to cast away his value or decision and force him to do something he does not want and is asking for justification of her want to do this.
Sorry, I say no. I think this is lousy behaviour. It is like him forcing you to do something in the bedroom that you did not want or to harangue you over it. Which woman here would support him in his actions to do that?
No, he said no, respect that or don't, but do not pretend it is still on the table after he said that it was not that is just dishonest.
