For everyone here who has had issues with prolong periods. Here is my story.

Back in August of 2008 i had a pap smear that came back abnormal with precancereous cells. I had the LEEP procedure done and i thought all was going well. I did before the procedure i did have a couple of symptoms that i did not think anything about. 1 was that during sex i would bleed but it didn't happen everytime. The 2nd was that i would have sometimes a period that would last about 4 days longer then normal. I have always been one to have normal periods so to have it be abnormal was not normal for me. I was not on no birth control so i knew i could rule that out as my issue.

Since my LEEP. I have been still bleeding while having sex but now its everytime. My periods went from 4 days longer than normal to having it 4 weeks out of the month. I also been having some other issues which i thought was related towards this but was recently diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease. About 6 moths ago i went to the doctor about all of my issues. I've had and ultrasound and several vaginal exams but they did not find anything. It wasn't until 3 months ago when they were performing an exam did they find something out of the ordinary. I had a polyp located on my vaginal wall. I was relieved yippee i though it would finally all be over with. Well since then I've only bleeded twice while having sex and my long periods are still the same. So because of that I decided to go back to my doctor. He decided to perform another pap since it looked like i have not had one for about a 1year or so. Every time he did exams earlier i was bleeding and they like to do a pap when you are not. He also on top of doing an exam took my blood and checked for a numerous of other things. I also had 2 new lumps on my breast so i had to also have a mammo done but that came back just fine. I received a call last week stating that my prolactin levels were high and will need to go in and have an MRI done. I also yesterday got a call from my doc stating that my PAP has come back again abnormal with the same HSIL like i had before. He has scheduled me for a colposcopy and will have a LEEP once the results come back on that.

If there are others out there having irregular bleeding make sure you doc does a pap smear. Also an elevated Prolactin level can cause irragular bleeding along with what i also had a milky discharge from my breast.

Hope everyone figures out why they are having prolonged periods.

I too have had a prolonged period. Going on for about 5 weeks straight now and complete with heavy periods of bright red clots, painful cramping (particularly at night...I cramp and bleed quite heavily and definitely after sex). I have had problems with breakthrough bleeding while on BCP and have tried about 5 different pills. Currently i was on Yaz (since March) and the breakthrough bleeding was minimial, but now it obviously isn't working due to the 5 week period. I did speak to my OB who said I can try the NuvaRing (which I don't think will help anyway), but he said that some women's bodies reject birth control pills and one way is by continual bleeding. So I decided to see what happens without the birth control and have been off it for 3 days now, but am still bleeding quite heavily. I know I have to give it some more time, but I feel everyone's frusturation. Another reason that I might have this prolonged bleeding is becasue I have been losing weight and exercising 6 days per week in the last 4 months. I have lost 40 pounds and it is possibly causing some hormonal issues. I also have Hypothyroidism and am getting my levels checked to make sure they aren't out of whack. But if I continue to bleed despite no birth control pills in my system I will be asking my OB for an ultrasound/checkup.

this is my second time experiencing what you are. The first time, they tried birth control on me and that made me sick. i have a history of cancer in my family and my mother died of cervical cancer. i had the biopsy but was never told the result. now, ever since july 4th weekend (2 months ago) I have started this again. it started out slow and once a week it would be very heavy. now for the past 21 days, it has been so heavy i feel like I am bleeding to death. i finally found a doctor to see me. my body is so weak right now. i have absolutely no energy whatsoever. i am always tired. its a mystery. i wished i could wake up tomorrow and it would be gone and my body was back to normal. i was boderline anemic when I had my son so I'm sure this is now an issue. my muscles are sore. everything about me is tired. I hope you are able to have some light shed on what is going on. and if you are pass some to me, please!

          Really?!?!?!?

This is weird because before I came across this website i really thought i was the only one that was having almost month long periods. The only thing is that i'm not currently on birth control. I used to be, and it did regulate my period but i have not been using them for almost a year and my period has never been like this. It has almost been a month and my period is still on. The one before lasted almost a month and it was off for a week and it came right back on.And it's not necessarily heavy. For about 2 weeks in i'm actually confused if it's on or not because of how light it is or can be. I end up finding out the hard way when i try to have intercourse and I start to bleed like i've been on my period and i knew better than to have sexual relations. It's totally embarrassing. The bad news is is that i don't have any health insurance to go see what's going on with me. But from looking at all the different stories it seems like there isn't a known reason for why this is happening or what it is. I've been wondering if it's been ovarian cancer or cyst on my ovaries. If anyone finds out anything please let me know.

Guys if a doc suggests an IUD, don't be afraid of it. It's not a popular birth control/period control method in the US, but it's VERY popular pretty much everywhere else. They're suggesting the Minera, I presume? The one with hormones?

yes I had endometriosis before and had surgery end 2003. My period was rather regular and very short when I was diagnosed. My cycle only went crazy after going through a very difficult and depressing event which lead to non stop periods. After 2 years, at one point it stopped and didn't come for months and sometimes it's more regular and very light flow and other months it''s REALLY heavy. I tried taking the Female Balance organic tea by Planet Organic (Australian brand, not sure if it's available outside of Australia) and that seemed to help. The ingredients in it is Licorice Root, Sage Leaf, Nettle Leaf, Chamomile Flowers & Lemongrass, you could probably find a similar organic tea in your local health shop. I've also been taking a chinese herb (mixture of a few kinds) called Pat Chan. I think you can get them from your local chinese medical hall in chinatown. You can tell them it's for female's cycle. It really worked for me. It's not the best tasting so I boil them like a chicken soup and add some salt or Worchestire sauce.
I think western medication stops the condition but does not provide healing of the root of the problem. A friend tried homeopathy and she says it helped.

So I'm not the only one either...this is terrible. I'm 20 and I had a period for a month and a week, I was so excited when it finally stopped, in the beginning it was barely spotting but towards the end it was really heavy. Then two weeks later it started again...I've always had irregular periods but usually it was only once every 3-4 months which was soooo much nicer. I'm not use to this at all but I heard it can be due to weight gain or loss, and I recently moved back home and started eating better, could that be it? I dont know what to think but I'm trying to get pregnant too and this isn't helping =( I thought thats what this was at first with the back aches, head aches, sore breasts, cramps, etc. but today i got the bad news lol
