I have had recurring BV for roughly six years. At first I didn't know what it was and thought it was normal discharge from my poor diet. When I got into a relationship my boyfriend finally said something about the smell so when I got health insurance I went to the OB. They diagnosed me with BV and HPV. They put me on metronidozale and gave me a colposcopy. Of course, it got worse! My relationship was on the brink of destruction and I was suicidal, but after a lot of research and trial and error, I am now BV and yeast infection free! Here is what I do:
    1. Severely cut back on sugars (including gluten), get your sugar from fruit. Vegan is truly the best way to go as dairy is a huge culprit.
    2. Eliminate energy drinks and coffee, if you must have caffeine drink 1-2 cups of green tea. (My odor was always horrible after caffeine)
    3. If you smoke, quit. It is worth it.
    4. I take a 3 Alive Women's multivitamins, 2 Reuteri probiotic pearls (on Amazon), 1 billion Lactoballicus Acidiphilous taken throughout the day with meals, more if I 'feel' something is off, 1,000 mg Vitamin C, garlic, zinc, and an immune support called Graviola.
    5. Graviola is essential if you have HPV, it helps stop the development of cancer cells.
    6. 2 dropperfuls of collidial silver, one in the morning and one in the evening.
    7. Two very important things are also; begin with 'First Cleanse', a two week cleanse avaliable at Walgreens. Then, begin the Hannah Kroeger Candida Cleanse. Expensive, but essential.

Other lifestyle changes include: NO Soap! Wash only with warm water or Vagisil PH Balance wash when you are on your period. NO harsh detergents (all natural is best), no synthetic fabric softener or dryer sheets (these can cause yeast infections). NO tampons, use a mooncup or pads (which should be changed every two hours). Please no douching. This is so tempting, but it will destroy your ecosystem.

I have only used the occasional Lactoballicus suppositories, usually after my period. I stay away from suppositores( like tea tree oil), and hydrogen peroxide douches because the vagina IS self cleaning, BV is an imbalance of bacteria. Introduce the good stuff back in and it will start healing itself. Introducing foreign substances is a bad idea. My way takes a while, a few months, but symptoms begin to get better and eventually go away. Monistat is okay for the yeast infection, it is proven. But, your yeast infections will go away with the sugar free, gluten free diet.

One more thing. If you are inserting a suppository, wash your hands with soap and make sure there is no residue. During intercourse, make sure your partner's hands and penis are also clean, dry and free of any soap residue. It is best to avoid intercourse, protected or unprotected, while you are cleaning out. If your partner won't wait for you, they are not worth the struggle.

    Good luck and god bless.

Hi. I have had the same problem as you and literally tried everything in the book. I am a pharmacy student and I know my medications, I took fluconazole and flagyl everytime I had bacterial vaginosis. It would take care of the problem temporarily but a few days after my treatment ended my symptoms would come back. I was suffering from this problem for 2 years now. Finally my gynecologist called a nearby compounding pharmacy and had them formulate vaginal capsules made up of boric acid, I took this treatment every night for 2 weeks. It really wiped out the problem. Now I'm on a maintanence therapy of consisting of inserting 1 capsule only twice a week. I will maintain this therapy for about 6 months. I also started taking probiotic capsules called primadophilus reuteri once a day and it is doing the trick! So far no problems. It's been 2 months now and no sign of infection.

I have been dealing with BV for two-three years. It was horrible. I was getting the BV at least once a month and I tried everything. Spent way too much money on so many doctors. Well I finally came across an OBGYN who had experience with the BV. She put me on s compound medication to insert vaginally twice a week. I used it for about four months. I haven't had it since!!! Please try this. I know how annoying the BV is and I know how incredibly frustrating it is to have no help from doctors but antibiotics. Here is the compound that the OBGYN gave to me I'm typing it straight off the bottle.
        BORIC ACID 400 MG/ ESTRADIOL3MG/ ACIDOPHILUS200MU 400MG/3MG/200MU

I'm not exactly sure what everything is but I know it worked for me and I hope it can help you women out there too!!
        Good Luck!

          Hi all,

I have had a combination of candida and bv for over 20 years. I've tried every possible 'cure' from conventional physicians and wasted thousands on naturopaths.

Recently I discovered this forum, and the advice regarding the GNC Ultra 30 billion women's probiotic. Last week I started using it. I inserted a capsule vaginally, and lo and behold, it worked! Pain is gone, odor is gone, discharge is gone. Needless to say I'm thrilled.

Just wanted to thank the poster who recommended this treatment! Many of you will know how debilitating candida and bv can be, and how tough they are to get rid of.

I currently am using one vaginal cap of the probiotic a couple of times a week for maintenance. I do not take them orally. I eat lots of nonfat, plain yogurt instead. I also try to limit my intake of simple carbs, flour, sugar, rice, potatoes etc - very difficult to do but necessary for yeast control.

If this helps anyone else, that would be great. Good luck to all - I know the beast you face!

            hello Girlies
im sooo new here but I had to share this with the world because I know how many girls suffers from BV YI or bot at the same time.
i have been suffering from BV and YI for the last 2,5 years, the amount of antibiotics and cures I have tried is crazy. Long story short- i have never managed to get rid of it!
Anyway i went docs 4 weeks ago for a smear test and asked them (again) to give me something for my BV the nurse said she will take samples to test it first, got my result week later no news here -BV and YI at the same time (i never get itchy or sore or red dpwn there the only symptom for me has always been the fishy/rotten smell and my discharge would change from time to time to white clumps) im sorry girls im just writing how it is ,so forgive if its TMI! Anyway i didnt get excited about doing another round of Canesten but I thought at least i will get rid of that smell for couple days. i also only just bought Acidophilus 3 billion as wel to take together with my daily vitamins because i have heard its good for u and might help with BV. i came up with an idea to insert Acidophilus into my vjay i must have read about it once but never tried before. So my idea was to insert canesten pessary for the night (it kills all the bacterias bad and good) and the very next morning i have inserted a tampon coverer in acidophilus powder(emptied the capsule and kind of rubbed it into the tampon) in my understanding canested would kill all the bacterias bad and good and acidophilus would restore the good bacterias. I kept inserting the acidophilus tampons in for half a day for about 6 days after that. dont knw if im right or is it a coincidence but BV and YI seem to be gone its been 2 weeks now and no trace of smell and my discharge is normal, my vjay feels normal! i didnt even remember what it feels like to be free from it and still cant believe it has gone away after 2,5 yrs of battling it with every possible cure. i just wanted to share in case it helps any of you ,it is worth a try.
for the first time in ages I have also noticed my fertile CM when i ovulated every other month it was jus white and thick all the time.
i only hope it lasts but for me 2 weeks its long already I will keep inserting acidophilus now every 2-3 days just to keep the good bacterias going.

                  Aerobic Vaginosis / DIV

                  Hi Jaagoda,

I'm thankful to come across your post. I have what you describe.

If anyone else is having similar symptoms, especially the pain with intercourse or to touch on top of the infection symptoms you associate with BV, please research aerobic vaginitis or DIV.

Also google mdl labs -- there are a ton on bacteria strands our gynos are not testing us for and this is how I learned about aerobic vaginitis / DIV in more detail -- if you have any aerobic bacteria come back on your culture tests, it's not BV ... (E coli, GBS, etc. is not BV).

It's also very common to have both, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria = BV.

Aerobic bacteria are rarely mentioned and treatment information is limited.

Jaagoda, I'm still on a path to a cure/proper regimen to address this and cannot find a gyno that can either -- could you please share an update on how you're doing / what treatments you used / what worked / didn't ?

Would highly appreciate to hear back.

Suffering for almost 9 years -- turns out it's not just BV after all.

And of course the AV / DIV is causing imbalance in flora and so the BV keeps coming back -- vicious cycle.

Those of you who are convinced you have chronic BV which does not resolve despite various treatments, it may actually be something else. I have been dealing with what I thought was BV for 5 years so please hear me out. In those 5 years, I have made numerous visits to a GYN where most times I was diagnosed with BV, once with Strep and E. Coli and other times I was told nothing was wrong despite my symptoms.

Now, symptoms are important so here are mine: heavy, yellow(off white), sometimes blood-tinged discharge, painful intercourse, feeling raw(irritation). I have taken countless medications, including antibiotics, boric acid, hydrogen peroxide douche, vaginal Vit. C, probiotics, OTC BV suppositories of all kinds. You name it, I've probably tried it. No relief. This year my symptoms have gotten worse. Namely, I have been feeling really irritated down there.

I did a google search, looked up the best GYNs in NYC and found one who was actually recommended to me also by a staff member from another clinic. During my visit, she took my history, examined me and tested for BV and yeast. Both came back negative. Next, she referred me to a specialist(MD) who said that my symptoms are characteristic of Desquamative Inflammatory Vaginitis. It is a rare and complex disorder. Please look it up online for more info. There seems to a correlation between Vit. D levels and this disorder. Apart from Vit. D, I was also prescribed Folgard Rx(Vit. B12, Folic Acid, Vit. B6). I started the therapy today and I am scheduled to follow up in 12 weeks so I will try to let you know how it goes. She also mentioned gastric/absorption/allergic/immunity problems that appear in patients who present with the symptoms I described above.
If what I described sounds familiar and you'd like the name of the professionals I saw, please PM me.
                    Hope this post helps someone.

I tried the doctor-prescribed medication to no avail. I tried the boric acid up my hoo-ha. The only thing that worked was D-Mannose, a natural supplement. I used it for 5 days straight, took 1 by mouth every 2 hours. It cleared up. Wanted to post this to help others who may not have had success using different routes. I also take it as directed once in the a.m. and once in the p.m. as a preventative measure.
