Just get a plain old fashioned IUD. Aside of wanting shorter periods what is the sense in getting a perfectly reliable, chemical free, form of conception control and adding chemicals to it? If you are in the US have Planned Parenthood do it, they did mine with no pain, no anesthesia. We get exposed to so much junk like BGH and antibiotics with the food we eat, why put a 24/7 source of more chemicals in your body?

      mirena

      Hi
I have had the mirena coil in for 3 years and googled it tonight as I have had some things going on and now wonder if its the mirena coil.
I got the coil fitted for heavy periods and the advantage of this device is that it is supposed to lighten period
That took over a year! They eventually got better and I am now at the stage where I have not had a period for 3 months (yay!!!) but what I have noticed is that I am getting pains in my upper legs like I used to years ago when I had painful periods (pre coil)
Also I am very down and I thought that was where I was in my life but reading some of the other posts it may be this...but no weight gain or chnage in libido (if anything it went up!)
So I am now unsure if its is the coil, it may be typical problems of being a women, I had pains in my legs well before the coil was fitted and it may just be the pressures of life as to why I am down...

        Im so sad

I had the Mirena coil fitted yesterday and was not told by my GP any of the side effects but after getting home and reading some really sad and worrying stories I called my GP and said I want it taken out. If they had of been honest with me and said what side effects are possible I would never have had it done , my GP tryed to tell me that what I was reading on the internet was rubbish huh, I would rather believe lots and lots of women who have been there and tried that rather than someone I feel is just trying to shrug me off, I nearly buckled and said ok ill keep it but then thought its my body and im not going to risk turning myself into a hairless, spotty, overweight very grumpy person. Its about time doctors were truthful we are inteligent woman who can make up our minds given the right facts

Let me start off by saying that the Mirena is NOT systemic, therefore the symptoms mentioned above aren't necessarily the cause of the Mirena. Women's hormone levels are at a constant rate of change. It's one of the burdens of being a woman. The hormones released by the Mirena are released directly to the lining rather than through your blood like the pill or the shot. True, it doesn't keep 100% of the released hormones from entering your bloodstream in some way, but the amount that does find it's way there isn't great enough to cause such drastic changes, or long term (and I'm talking no more than 6 weeks here) side effects. Ultimately, it is not just the product that is "bad" or "problematic". Not to mention any side effects experienced, while they could be the result of the hormone entering the blood stream, should only last 4-6 weeks and no more than that. If they do, I would address this issue with your doctor immediately.

I personally have been on the Mirena since December of last year. After hearing many of my friends rave about how great it was, I looked into getting it for myself. I haven't experienced any problems. I had a normal period in January, and even lighter (but still normal according to the time frame) period in February, and haven't experienced anything since. I did notice during the following three months, that after intercourse I experienced very minimal spotting, which was due to the cervix being reirritated from penetration. I still have my normal monthly symptoms, thanks to being a woman! Other than that nothing out of the ordinary. My friend who has been on the Mirena 3+ years now actually lost weight after having it put in. Everyone is different, and our bodies aren't going to react the same to everything. If you have experienced the Mirena, and you know you don't like it, that's one thing, but I don't want others reading to feel as if all these horror stories are going to happen to them and get scared away. All stories aren't bad! I can speak from experience, and I can add two of my personal friends, and the entire female nursing staff working in the Neonatal Ward at Scott and White hospital.

                Mirena coil

Well I had it taken out and I have to say the GP was really nice about it, she did try and talk me out of it by saying people only report negative things on the internet, there were a few good reports but they was outwayed by the bad, I guess its personal choice and I was so worried after all the reading not just here but lots of different sites that having it removed for me was the only option, having said that after lots of discussion with my doctor it also transpired that it might not have worked for me anyhow as mine was fitted to try and help with my endometriosis but as mine had spread to my bowl and bladder and not just the womb I would have probably still had lots of pain.

                  Mirena coil side effects

Hi I've been reading all your messages with interest. After suffering heavy periods for a year or so, and being diagnosed with fibroids, the hospital consultant recommended a hysterectomy or the Mirena coil. I really didn't want to go through surgery so opted for the coil. No periods whatsoever, fantastic! Two months ago I discovered a breast lump and, because there's history in my family (both my mum and her sister died of breast cancer) I got really worried. Had a mammogram and ultrasound this week and the lump is a benign cyst, thank goodness. But it got me thinking about the coil so I went on some websites then discovered this one. I also have had substantial weight gain even though I exercise regularly - I just thought it was my age (49). Don't think I have particularly bad mood swings (although my husband might disagree!) but I just wondered if this lump would have anything to do with the hormones from the coil? Does anyone else think this? Maybe its just a coincidence.

                    coil

I had the mirena fitted last year, i found in the last few weeks i have gotten an awful lot of discharge and swelling in my tummy, i panicked and even tho i am in a long term relationship doubted my partner and went to a std test. Which turned up negative, I had had pre cancerous cells showing up in a previous smear but all that in the meantime was given the all clear.

I had suffered a misscarrage 2 years ago and have a 5 year old daughter.
So i started to worry about my fertility also??

I discussed with my gp and my local family planning clinic who both assured me there was nothing wrong with my coil, I really do believe its my coil giving me some hassle, as there is no other explination. its very worrying for me as no body can give me answers as to what this problem is. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?

I am to embarrassed to see my gp again as I feel if he explained hes views before to me than the 2nd time if i go back again he may think im making all this up.
                    Please help

                    thanks.

Is it that or am I going mad.

Hi. I have found it very interesting to read all the comments good and bad.

I had my Mirena inserted in July. My periods were every 26 days, lasting about 7 days and heavy. My iron levels were extremely low, so thus the decision to try and stop my periods. I bled, not heavily, for two months. I have been depressed, concerningly depressed. Tired, iron levels are okay, but ferritin storage is not good. Weight - about 2kg, but spread (around the middle). My diet hasn't changed and I have weighed the same for a few years. Headaches. I've noticed my vision has been a bit blurry the last week. Don't have to worry about the libido as not in a relationship.

The weight could be - God forbid- middle age spread. The depression could be attributed to my ex not allowing either of us to move forward and him not getting out of my head. Tired - could be that the alarm goes off at 6am.

My Gyno said that if I wasn't happy with the Mirena, he could easily do a hysto and I get to keep my ovaries. What to do? Get the Mirena removed, have the hysto. (Does that set off a whole lot of other problems) See the naturopath to sort out the iron problems. Have a contract put out on the ex - :-)
