i take it u have never been sent so loopy u thought yr were going to lose yr mind????

Women's hormone levels are at a constant rate of change. It's one of the burdens of being a woman. The hormones released by the Mirena are released directly to the lining rather than through your blood like the pill or the shot. True, it doesn't keep 100% of the released hormones from entering your bloodstream in some way, but the amount that does find it's way there isn't great enough to cause such drastic changes, or long term (and I'm talking no more than 6 weeks here) side effects. Ultimately, it is not just the product that is "bad" or "problematic". Not to mention any side effects experienced, while they could be the result of the hormone entering the blood stream, should only last 4-6 weeks and no more than that. If they do, I would address this issue with your doctor immediately.

I personally have been on the Mirena since December of last year. After hearing many of my friends rave about how great it was, I looked into getting it for myself. I haven't experienced any problems. I had a normal period in January, and even lighter (but still normal according to the time frame) period in February, and haven't experienced anything since. I did notice during the following three months, that after intercourse I experienced very minimal spotting, which was due to the cervix being reirritated from penetration. I still have my normal monthly symptoms, thanks to being a woman! Other than that nothing out of the ordinary. My friend who has been on the Mirena 3+ years now actually lost weight after having it put in. Everyone is different, and our bodies aren't going to react the same to everything. If you have experienced the Mirena, and you know you don't like it, that's one thing, but I don't want others reading to feel as if all these horror stories are going to happen to them and get scared away. All stories aren't bad! I can speak from experience, and I can add two of my personal friends, and the entire female nursing staff working in the Neonatal Ward at Scott and White hospital.
i take it you have never experienced going so loopy, crazy out of control that u thought u were losing yr mind!! horror stories, yes hormones can send u crazy and every1 should hear wot could posibly go wrong wen given hormone treatment!! no 1 told me about side effects of progesterone did they no they didnt!!!! i have pmdd and was put on yasmin then the patchs. i went soooo loopy i beat the out of my dog then my horse, i was sooooo violant that my german shephed just lay there. he could of riped my face off he should off, my horse is a fat cob that could also have done me damage but she didnt she was in shock that some 1 who only does positive reinforcement training (food rewards no punishment) could be so different. i never want to feel like that ever again to be out of control and not be able to stop it, to feel u r losing yr mind and too ashamed to tell any1!!! if gp's told people possible side effects, they could either try it and put plans in place so they dont train their horse on their own and be able to get contact with some1 so it can be taken out in an emergency etc or they could say no thanks i'd rather not try. just because u have never experience going mad with hormone treatment doesnt mean others wont either and we have the rite to no wot side effect others have had!! my gp has been discusing the coil with me to have after i have a baby to stay level but i tell u wot from everything they have made me try so far im either violant with myself or others, or ive ending up having blood tranfusions where the hormones have sent me so nuts ive lost so much blood from cutting my throat or veins, im glad these women can share how it effected them and not some toff of a gp saying no no nothing wrong here!! from reading others experiences n knowing how ive reacted to other hormone treatment in the past i will deffo not be bullied in2 having the coil, i will not be sent back in2 being mad and then have some gp tell me its all in my head and end up so bloody confused again that i hang on every word they say, no thank u

i want to thank all the women who have posted there experience because im so highly intolorent to hormones if i listened to that gp i could of ended up back in that place so thank you so much for being honest

sorry if this sounds harsh in any way but but to be dismised or not given the rite to no wot can hapen is very dangerous indeed!

Which turned up negative, I had had pre cancerous cells showing up in a previous smear but all that in the meantime was given the all clear.

I had suffered a misscarrage 2 years ago and have a 5 year old daughter.
So i started to worry about my fertility also??

I discussed with my gp and my local family planning clinic who both assured me there was nothing wrong with my coil, I really do believe its my coil giving me some hassle, as there is no other explination. its very worrying for me as no body can give me answers as to what this problem is. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?

I am to embarrassed to see my gp again as I feel if he explained hes views before to me than the 2nd time if i go back again he may think im making all this up.
      Please help

      thanks.
it discugsts me that gp's make people feel like there making things up. if yr worried have it removed once settled write a diary of how u r if u want u can put it back in and continue the diary and see if there is a change. gp's r paid to sell phamarcy products and will often push drugs on to people that dont need it. i was consently told i was depressed have these pills but thank god i was strong enough to say no and write diary which showed them the real problem as they now found out the underlying problem of pmdd!!!

got the mirena coil and found a lump

Two months ago I discovered a breast lump and, because there's history in my family (both my mum and her sister died of breast cancer) I got really worried. Had a mammogram and ultrasound this week and the lump is a benign cyst, thank goodness. But it got me thinking about the coil so I went on some websites then discovered this one. I also have had substantial weight gain even though I exercise regularly - I just thought it was my age (49). Don't think I have particularly bad mood swings (although my husband might disagree!) but I just wondered if this lump would have anything to do with the hormones from the coil? Does anyone else think this? Maybe its just a coincidence.
        hi jazznew
i too suffered heavy embarrassing periods for 3 years then decided to have the mirena coil fitted, after months of still irregular periods they did eventually sort themselves out but my moods have been awful i feel moody before and after my period get period pain nearly all of the time, im tired lifeless, but worse of all just last week 2weeks after my period i started to get really sore breasts and also found a lump in my left breast, i went to my gp and said i felt it was a hormone thing cause i was also feeling really weepy, he agreed that it was more likely to be that but at same time decided to send me for a mamogram to be on the safe side, that was 2days ago i have been stressing myself out worrying about worst scenarios and this morning woke up to find my period has arrived early and lumps are now down i still have pain in my breasts and especially underarm but hopefully that will gradually go over next few days too, i will still go for mamogram to be on safe side but after reading your blog was wondering was it maybe the coil that was causing it.

          desperate

i had a copper coil fitted but it made my periods uncontrollably heavy so i had it swapped for a mirena. i wasn't keen on the mirena because of the hormone component but my doctor was dismissive of my concerns and i believed her.

As soon as the mirena was fitted my periods stopped, which was nice, but i also got a constantly swollen, uncomfortable belly and swollen breasts. I found myself bursting into tears over the slightest things- normally i am very unemotional and never cry. My weight began to increase steadily, which was probably the worst part. It sounds strange, but i also felt physically weak- i do judo and i began to find it a struggle, feeling unusually weak and tired when i was sparring.

After two months i went back to the family planning clinic where it was fitted to discuss my concerns. The doctor who saw me fobbed me off, telling me that i just had to 'watch what i was eating' and that the mirena 'doesn't have side effects' but any changes i noticed would revert to normal 'soon'. She examined me, could not find the threads of the thing (notice this seems to be a common problem for nurses and doctors?), told me that it was a 'good method of contraception' and that i should stick with it.

Thinking my 'symptoms' were probably just of my own imagining, i looked online and as soon as i googled 'mirena' all the search results were a description of what i was experiencing- depressed, tearful, gaining weight, even the physical weakness and fatigue.

Do not let doctors convince you that you are imagining things- you know your own body and you know how you should feel. For some people the mirena coil may be an acceptable contraceptive but not for me- i removed mine immediately, by myself. Oddly enough i was able to find the threads quite easily by myself and it came out with no pain, just a little blood. By the next day the tearfulness had stopped and i returned to normal over the next couple of weeks. I'm feeling so much better and back in control of my own body again.

i'm not saying everyone should go and whip out their mirena, but if in doubt...don't let your doctor fob you off. it's your body.

So pleased I found this site

I am so pleased to have come across this site, I had the marina coil fitted last month, started to bleed day after and still spotting, also I have started to gain weight which I was not made aware of and in agony with back pain.
I shall give it a little longer as I don't want to go back to having very heavy periods.

I actually started on prozac and counseling 6 mo after getting the mirena. I am so glad to have found this site because I have been miserable and I have no reason to be. I have found myself feeling like I was going to lose it and hurt someone. I would cry at as soon as someone asked how I was. I never felt like this before not even when my father or grandmother died years ago. I am going to have this removed and plan on going on Yaz or back to Tro Ortho Cyclen.

i had my mirina coil fitted over 2 months ago, and since then have not stopped bleeding, but most importantly my moods are quite literally out of control, im angry at everyone and every thing, whereas i am usually a happy person, i feel like i have stopped enjoying my life, each day i feel like i want to end my relationship, my boyfriend has been a saint putting up with me, but not sure for how much longer, there can be no other reason for me feeling this way, i just wanted to know if anyone else has had this and if it will eventuallly sort itsself out, or should i just get it taken out, Please Help!

Consider the copper IUD as opposed to this one if you're having prolonged trouble. No hormones!!

Tell everyone you know_Mirena is dangerous!!

I had the Mirena put in for all the right reasons, but started having problems immediately. I wish I had looked up all the THOUSANDS of women's complaints before!
I had "spotting" in lots of different colors, consistencies and scents! My cooch was a cornucopia of wierdness!! You will never want to have sex again!
I felt drugged and slowed down-I couldn't concentrate on anything. Within a few months I was completely irritated all the time--as well as depressed.
It's been two years since I had it taken out. I've tried several different supplements (hundreds of $$$$) and several anti-depressants and nothing has made a dent in this all-consuming hatred of life. I've been suicidal for a year.
So, yes, it's a great contraceptive--neither you nor your partner will ever want sex again!
