I wanted to kill my kids. I wouldn't admit it to myself even until I read one of these complains where a woman said she was holding herself back from slapping her kid. I felt like that all day--the kids whole waking time. When they were asleep they were lovable again. This is a hormonal problem! Take out the Mirena!Hi
I have my mirena coil fitted 8 months ago. I used combined oral contraceptive pills for 9 years. I really like the mirena coil initially as i didn't have spotting, no period, i didn't seem to have problems with weight gain, my sex life is much much better as compared to before. But recently, i have noticed that i'm having a very bad mood swing. i used to be a calm and patient person, but now I tend to get annoyed and angry quite easily especially at home. i noticed that i'm shouting often, and by doing so, i get really frustrated and disappointed of myself as i didn't want to be a mean person especially to my 9 year old daughter whose also noticing my bad mood. i'm starting to hate myself. it just came to my mine that it maybe the mirena coil as since i had it i noticed the mood swings getting worst. i want to ask if anyone has experienced the same problem? i would like my mirena coil removed but i don't want to go back to OCP? is there any alternative contraceptive that i can use?Comment

Mirena coil
Thank you to all who have posted on this site regarding the mirena coil.
I have found your experiences very helpful.
I am a professional working Mum with 2 adorable children. I had the Mirena / minerva coil fitted in October 2008. I have very light infrequent periods now, that's about the only good thing I can say about the coil, other than it does work as a contraceptive. I had the coil fitted after my second child as I was back at work and didn't want another child.
I feel I was mislead, before I had my second child I was planning on using a cap in addition to natural planning after having my second child. I went to see a different family planning nurse however after having my second child and they suggested the mirena coil. I was told that it was the best option and that many women have it put in and forget they have it. It sounded too good to be true! I had always been nervous of having a coil and I didn't want to go back on the pill due to my age and the hormones, I didn't really understand about the fact that the coil has the hormones too and I wasn't told about the side effects.
This makes me angry that we're not told about the side effects as I've seen messages as far back as 2004.
The first side effects I thought I could live with, Irritable Bowel, weight gain and spots.
However I then got other side effects which I found more frightening my legs started swelling at first it was after a flight so I put it down to the air travel, but its since happened just while I've been at work. I've also had nose bleeds. The only time I've had swelling in my legs and nose bleeds before was when I was pregnant with my first child.
The most worrying side effect for me though is the mood swings and depression. I hadn't connected these until I read all the entries on this site. I thought I just wasn't coping properly or I was really stressed. However it frightens me that I snap at my children and I adore them.
I have an appointment booked with the doctor on Wednesday and hope not to be talked out of having it taken out.
What really makes me mad is that I've also found a site listing the side effects and I can real off a list of them. Why aren't we told!!!!
If you have children and your mood swings are abnormal I'd consider whether its the coil!Last edited by Greenfields; 01-30-2010, 07:59 PM.Comment

I had the mirena fitted last year, i found in the last few weeks i have gotten an awful lot of discharge and swelling in my tummy, i panicked and even tho i am in a long term relationship doubted my partner and went to a std test. Which turned up negative, I had had pre cancerous cells showing up in a previous smear but all that in the meantime was given the all clear.
I had suffered a misscarrage 2 years ago and have a 5 year old daughter.
So i started to worry about my fertility also??
I discussed with my gp and my local family planning clinic who both assured me there was nothing wrong with my coil, I really do believe its my coil giving me some hassle, as there is no other explination. its very worrying for me as no body can give me answers as to what this problem is. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?
I am to embarrassed to see my gp again as I feel if he explained hes views before to me than the 2nd time if i go back again he may think im making all this up.
Please help
thanks.
I also noticed how much my stomach has been bloated and i have been getting thrush which i never had problems with before i feel like the coil is not suiting and it be the same for alot of people.Comment

Hi. I have had the marina coil for over 4 years. I have made an appointment to have the coil taken out. Up until recently i would have reccommended the coil to anyone who asked about it but just recently my periods have being irregular, i am more spotty than normal and have being on a period on and off for a full month now, until reading all these posts i didn't even think about the coil. It all adds up, although i havn't had a lot of weight gain, i have being very down over the past few years and doubts in my marriage and insecure, always tierd and grumpy although i am in a happy marriage with 3 great kids. I am going to have it taken out and see if their is a change in my hormones. Think its about time my husband manned up and did something about birth control. Ive done my fair share!!! I shall repost in a couple of months if there is any difference or whether it just is me but i'm only thirty so hope this isn't gona carry on when i have it taken out. Hope everyone else who have gone against the marina are all well xxComment

Hi,
To be honest I am glad I didn’t read this forum about the Mirena coil before I had it fitted last October, because if I would have read all the comments on this forum I don’t think I would have had it fitted.
After a long miserable 16 month of feeling very tired all the time, having periods for 4 weeks at the time, my GP recommended and yes she warned me about the side effects I had the coil fitted.
I can quiet honestly say, I have never looked back. I had a bit of spotting for the first 3 weeks and I was told that it takes up to 6 (!) month to settle which it did. I now haven’t had a period for 4 month, haven’t put on any weight unless I had too many chocolates or glasses of wine, no more mood swings, but most of all I have got my energy back. I am feeling a lot better within myself and that’s just what I needed having just hit the big 5 - 0!!!!
Ok, my libido has gone down hill a bit, but we are working on that!! After all, we have been married for nearly 30 years!!!
Just wanted to share my positive experience about the coil with all of you.Comment

hi,
i seem to be a bit in a world of my own! im 22 years old but suffer from irregular and heavy periods, the pill lessons them to constant spotting but the every-day bleeding is wearing me down. upon recent reccomendationi am investigating the marinea coil and - despite knowing the possible side effects - it seems to me to be worth the chance. right now, i hate being a woman. I constantly feel dirty and always have to think about having access to a bathroom close at hand. Even if im on a six month break - irregular! - the fear of return knowing how heavy i am is disabling (i'd have less than 15 mins t deal with it). anything is worth the chance.
my question for you all is, would you take the risk? if you were back befre yu were fitted with the coil would you chose to take the risk again?
thanks,
katieComment
