Do you really want to do some "etching" or are you saying you want to do something romantic?
Valentine's Day doesn't have to be complicated. Here are the basic keys to success:
Flowers
Chocolate
Dinner
Show her that you're thinking about her all day - texts, calls, etc.
Make her feel special and loved.
That's about it. Oh one thing that is totally romantic (and this may sound odd coming from me) - don't make it about sex. If you're doing all that stuff as a means to an end, she will know. It's actually a totally awesome move to do all that stuff and then not even 'make your move' that night, just cuddle her up good and proper. If her engine gets started, she'll make it clear pretty quickly and that will be a bonus for you and the best possible outcome because she will have initiated it and it will be 'pure.' But don't get all frisky right after dinner and the gift-giving like you're following a schedule.
Oh my last fave thing - flowers twice on Valentine's. Once at work which is pretty normal, but then bring some home too. She will love it.
Sorry guys but this is one of those events where you should pretty much just resign yourself to it being about her. Don't worry, you'll always have Super Bowl Sunday.

Are you looking for the usual, or something different?
One year, I did a picnic. Of course, it was too cold to go on an actual picnic, so I cleared out space in the living room, laid a blanket and made a picnic basket with wine, cheese, bread, etc and we age in the moonlight. Then there was the time I cooked a really fancy meal and put out the fancy china, got dressed up at one home. Even sitting on the couch cuddling and watching a romance movie with pizza and beer works if that is what she likes and you put the effort in organizing it (picking the movie, clearing up the TV room, chilling her favorite beer, etc).
Sometimes local theaters have specials of classic romance movies that you can see (get tickets in advance). Personally I find flowers, chocolate and dinner kind of boring. But it really depends on what she likes. You can do more unique things like recreating your first date.Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose - Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster (sung by Janis Joplin)Comment

It is Valentines day here in NZ and as usual I wrote my wife a lovely poem... we are going out to dinner later then to the Chinese lantern Festival that's on this weekend. I have put a nice bottle of wine in the fridge for later and we have some chocolates at home (although I shouldn't be eating them as I'm diabetic!)
I will give her a nice massage in bed, and providing she does not fall asleep during the massage (she does occasionally) we might have some romantic cuddles later!Comment
