Sometimes the way these things are said in sources makes me less confident that they are backed by scientific studies. The sixth day after ejaculation does not seem to be supported by studies. I suppose in extremely rare cases it could happen. The best study I have seen, which would take a long time to find so I could cite it verbatim, indicated the chance of getting pregnant on each day after sex, including day zero, the day of having sex. By the fifth day, the chance of getting pregnant was almost zero. A study I found that was published in the NEJM on December 7, 1995 also supports most of that, except that day five prior to ovulation was a day that conception was possible. Effects on the probability of conception, survival of the pregnancy, and sex of the baby.] Its biggest problem is in the scale of the study, which wasn't large enough to smooth out the results properly. I would prefer results from a study 100 times larger, all else being equal. For use in trying to conceive, studies such as in the NEJM one indicate sex on an every other day or every third day is probably the best, giving sufficient time for sperm potential to recover.

According to the text book, this was the old thinking. But a more recent study has suggested that some sperm can live 6 days. I'm sure, the number of live sperm go down each day, but that doesn't mean the risk is nullified. The study showed that pregnancy occurred when intercourse happened within up to 5 days before ovulation and the egg is viable for 1 day suggesting some sperm survived up to 6 days.

I don't have a reference for you. The chapter includes a bunch of references including the one you cite. I don't know which one is the study they discuss. The edition of the book I have was published in 2006.

I was taught that the mucus development, plus peak day, then 3 days after peak are all fertile days

the mucus starts as sticky, cloudy or tacky cloudy then develops up to stretchy or clear (peak day)
all those days are listed as fertile days on my learning chart

Hi dear. I am happy that you are searching answers in such renowned forum and I am sure you will get better answers. A friend of mine said that from his point of view having sex with a condom on was like walking around with soaking wet clothes that just stick to you & make you feel uncomfortable. Aside from my weird friend you should take into account health and well the consequences of a child if neither of you are at that stage in your life that children aren't the plan. If you both see a doctor and get everything checked out & y'all come up clean there are other types of contraception such as the pill that will prevent pregnancy and will not require you to use a condom. And if you conceive don’t forget to get a checkup from a good gynecologist. I would suggest medical person from Ukraine as they are best in this matter. As much as I don't like condoms, I'd recommend their use until a scientific blood test eliminates STD's. Some STD's are drug resistant & some can kill.

well my wife & I haven't used protection since 2005.... we wanted to start a family, but weren't able to conceive.... the fertility specialist said it was a case of 'unexplained infertility'

Having sex with a new lover is one way to overcome the loss of sensation from a condom. I'm not sure what you do when the newness wears off. I have ever been able to orgasm with one on, even with a new lover.
