Wow I thought it was just me! I am flipping out over here I have been so nervous. I had my IUD put in about June of this summer 2010. Around August was the first time I was sexually active and I immediately got a Yeast infection. Then my BF moved in with me the end of October I have had back to back BV and a UTI. Finally I thought I was good for about a week and now I have what I think may be thrush its like a rash or something very painful seems like cuts on my Perineum (area between vagina and anus. had to look that one up). That I cant have sex, sit or do anything. Boy am I happy that 3 weeks ago I had STI tests done because I would really have thought I had herpes or hpv or something like that. I realllly loved not having to rememebr the pill every day but this isnt worth. I never had a very high sex drive but it is pretty much gone at this point. Other than that i am always tired anyway and my fluctuates normally so I couldnt tell if that is from the IUD. I am afraid to go to the doctor for this rash IDK y I have anxiety I always feel like they are going to tell me I am dying. Was trying to treat it without seeing a doc...I am crazy I know. Also seems like I have a pimple on the inside on my Vagina lips which I have gotten before but on top of the other thing I feel like a walking disease. ...Thanks ladies glad u are all here to relate. Why dont doctors come to the webistes before they say things like its not likely the BV's are from the IUD or Yeast infections. My other friend has had chronic yeast infections since hers has been in and before this had never had a yeast infection. I on the other hand have always been prone to them. ayyyyy yay yay! -
I haven't had as much trouble as everyone else but I think it really is different for every woman. BV from what I was told is usually caused when the doctor doing the insertion doesn't sterilize things well enough, so bacteria introduced during insertion settles in to stay! I had an iodine cream applied to my cervix before measuring and insertion which it was explained would sterilize the area and discourage infection. Any time you insert something you're going to introduce bacteria; the only recourse is to be -very- careful when inserting and keep yourself clean before/after. Some women just get infections much easier and the IUD makes it worse I think.
As far as pain during insertion; it hurt like the worst cramps I've ever had, but it was short and the doc said it was because I was very calm and relaxed. I took deep breaths and focused on happy things and it really helped and I didn't have any problems even though I haven't had kids and my uterus is small (so the doc said when she measured). If they don't measure they're doing something wrong - they need to know which way your uterus tilts and how big it is so they can insert correctly and not puncture or scrape you!
I have the copper IUD (Paragard) because I wanted to avoid the dryness and other problems that I experienced while on the pill. I have not seen any increase in yeast infections - haven't had one at all since I stopped the pill. I think the hormones were causing them. I'm not surprised that Mirena seems to be causing problems for everyone! Hormones are just not a good way to provide birth control. :/ Even the copper IUD isn't a perfect choice but I think it's better than the hormones, for me anyway.Comment

wow, I had the paragard IUD inserted in November and also having constant cramping, it definitely feels like pms and I keep waiting for a period to start. I totally missed a period in December, had a negative pg test just last week and very much concerned. But I can't see a gyno yet until my pay check, they want to do ultrasound and blood pg test. I have zero pregnancy symptoms and the nurse at planned parenthood told me it could be my body trying to adjust to it. I'm not sure now, if this was worth the price. I wanted something that would prevent a pregnancy and this seemed perfect, no hormones and good for up to 10 years. But, now I think i'm regretting it. glad to know there are others (even on a mirena iud) having same symptoms.Comment

Loving Husband
My wife had an iud inserted about 6 months ago after our first child. Sex has not been the same since. My wife would always orgasm when we had sex but now she does not. I could say it maybe a post birth thing but we a had good sex after the baby and she was able to orgasm. It is only since the insertion of the iud that this has happened and it seems sex is more of a chore now, and I can understand why because she is getting nothing out of it but because she it not really interested I am now reluctant to approach her. Our sex life was good before the baby when she was on the pill and it was good after the baby but since the iud it is not the same at all. I am talking about a woman who would go orgasm to orgasm with me, to now having none.Comment

IUD
I LOVED my IUD until it came time to take it out. I have had two babies by c section because I don't dilate. Even after all of the labor and being induced and my water broken there was nothing they could do to make me dilate. I also have a small, slightly bicornate uterus. I know how you felt when they inserted it, I wasn't aware that they inserted Mirena in women who haven't had babies yet?
If the insertion was only slightly painful, imagine my removal as 100X worse.

Wow there are certainly a lot of horror stories on here. I thought I'd add my own little bit of info for anyone else who reads this. I had the Paragard IUD(copper one) put in about a month ago. Insertion was painful, but definitely bearable. (By the way, I'm 25 and never had kids). I bled after for the next 2-3 days. It wasn't too much, but I definitely went through 2 pads a day. After that, I had no issues until 2 weeks later. I started having cramps that were enough to make me stop what I was doing until they faded. I had to walk out of class (I'm a grad student) because I couldn't concentrate due to the pain. Ibuprofen barely helped. But, the cramps only happened every other day, with spotting when I had the cramps. The bleeding wasn't as much as if I had my period. That was about a week before my period was due. My regular period started on time and lasted the normal length. Sometimes my bf says he can feel it, but that's very rare. So far, I'm happy with it, but we'll see how my body responds with time. I've heard that women get yeast and bacterial infections with them, and I'm also worried about it becoming embedded. We'll see what happens.Comment
