Mirena = Yeast Infections & BV

I have had the five year Mirena for about 3 years now and at first I loved it because I have no periods I was telling everyone I knew to get it.

The reason I decided to research the IUD is because I have relentless yeast infections and have had bacterial vaginosis several times as well. I'm very clean, I use dove and non-perfumed products, wipe from front to back, etc.

I stay in my ob/gyn's office and she seems to be getting irritated. I've tried the one dose pill and 7 day pills (forget the name), different types of yeast infection cream. Nothing has worked. It seems I have yeast infections more often than I don't. I started inserted my clean finger into my vagina to check for discharge and a couple of times, I had about a teaspoon of yeast in my vagina that had accumulated in one day. I was horrified!

Also, I spot almost every time I have intercourse. I have also had memory loss as well and never would have thought it was associated with the IUD. I also get dizzy.

I am so glad I have read the other posts and have learned that many other women have had the same issues. I'm having it removed ASAP.

I haven't had that issue with my Merina though I have had a yeast infection or two. I am also very clean but you realize that men can carry them as well. So if you are being treated and he is not he could just be giving it right back to you. We are more prone to infection because we are "open" as my ob tells me. Plus I use naturally scented everything I'm a "noid" cleaner when it comes to my body which means I have a special soap for my na-na and she has her own lotion etc

Ive only had the IUD in for a few weeks now, and I hate it! I feel so depressed, not to mention I get very bad cramps, Im loosing my hair, the IUD is so not worth it!

IUD trouble

Hi, I had the mirena inserted in May 2009 and it was with minimal pain. I loved it until two weeks ago. I started having cramps and back pain and nausea. After having sharp pains in my lower right side twice, to the point where I could not move, I went to the dr only to be told that I had a ruptured cyst. I have never had such a thing before and still not sure if that is what it is since he just listened to what I had to say and made a diagnosis. I am not sure if it is the mirena but I know that the likelihood of cysts will be increased with the mirena. If anyone else have had this experience or know what is wrong pls let me know.

Hi all! I'm new to this site and I'm just hoping that I can find some answers and support.
I had a merena IUD put in about 6 months ago. There are several issues I'm having that I feel are connected to the IUD.
I'm having PAINFUL intercourse, cramping, sharp pain etc, very much feels like a BAD period. I feel like I'm having constat pms. On top of that I have been having vaginal dryness, chronic BV that flipflops into a yeast infection and then back to BV. I haven't had any relief in about 3 months despite being on Diflucan once a week, metronidozal gel and pills.
My question is this: Could this be due to the IUD? Hormone imbalances? Has anyone else expereinced painful intercourse after having an IUD inserted?

I actually have the paraguard copper IUD. I am going on three years in May. I can finally say that I am thankful ONLY for slightly less cramping. My cycle is a heavy 10 days after every 20, and spotting in between. I have had constant infection, discharge, aches in my back and neck, vaginal dryness, occasional pain and spotting with intercorse and constant struggle with a 10 pound weight gain/loss. I have been hospitalized twice, (in the first year) where they did an ultrasound and informed me that because of the infections, I have scar tissue around the IUD and its string, (which was cut too short) and for this reason I will have to have it surgically removed in the OR, only to recover with 20% chance of children due to my miscarrage history. I had hoped after the first year (like the docs kept saying) that I would start to feel better. Unfortunatley not so in my case. The reason I found this web site tonight is because I am not feeling well at all. I KNOW it is IUD related.

I think you're right, it's probably the Mirena. Like you said, cysts are more common, at least initially, with Mirena. As far as I know, they're benign, but can hurt a lot. It's probably only an issue if you get repeated ones?

Hi! Wow! This thread is an eye opener. However I must tell you that I have had my Mirena for 5 years (yep, time to get a new one). While it did hurt more than I expected getting it inserted (apparently I have a "tilted" uterus) the cramping subsided after a day. I stopped having regular periods after about a year (have small ones every other month or so). I have not experienced ANY of the problems I've seen listed here. I am so sorry for the problems I have seen listed, what a drag. I hope you get them all resolved. But I have been problem free. Fingers crossed.

I don't want to discount any of the posts hear, but negative posts travel faster than positive ones. I am barely beginning my journey with my copper iud (4months now). I have had absolutely NO problems with my iud. No cramping even during my period. NO excessive bleeding. I don't feel it with rough sex. My periods do last about 5-7 days they are heavier but managable. I would totally recommend the IUD to anyone whether it be hormonal or non. IUDs work. They have proven to work for so many women. The thing is that we are all different and we will experience different scenerious with our IUDs whether it be bad or good. Some of us just aren't meant to have IUDs. Call it what you want, but if you are in so much pain and are constantly bleeding past the 3month to 6th month stage, by all means get it taken out.

I'm on my second IUD. I'm glad I've never had any problems with it..which is the reason why I got a second one. Removal and insertion was not painful just very uncomfortable.
I would suggest speaking to your doctor about the symptoms you're experiencing. They're not normal. I don't have periods and when I do it's very light spotting for a few days. Maybe your doctor can recommend a better birth control method. Keep in mind that even though Mirena is perfect for some people it may not be suitable for all women. Hope you get the medical help you need and good luck!

Maybe the doctors that put your IUD in didn't do it properly or it sounds like they were'nt cautious when it came to using disinfected tools...or maybe the nurses didn't do their job properly. Either way it sounds like the infections were PUT in with your IUD. I am sorry that you all had to go through this because mine has been in for 2 months and besides the occassional cramp (which my doc warned me about) or the occassional bleeding, I've been as happy as can be with it
My sex drive is up, if anything, since there isn't the worry of pregnancy...and I don't feel depressed. In fact, my other doc, to whom I've gone to speak about my PMS has told me that with Mirena it would eventually probalby help, because it levels your hormones.
My doc warned me on the Copper IUD!!! and I'm happy I paid the extra bucks for Mirena.
Yeast infections are easy enough to get, sometimes from certain drugs, sometimes from your partner who hasn't been faithful, sometimes from your too many baths and not enough cleaning the bathtub!
I live with a pharmacist If he didn't think Mirena safe for me, he would not have bought it for me!!
If I were all you, I'd go talk to another gyno and get his opinion on your experience. I wouldn't be surprised if your infections and pain was due to your doctor's incompetance. My pharmacist man deals with those kind EVERY DAY! Not all doctors are good at doctoring... unfortunatelly.

Completely agree with you! I'm on my second one and many of my friends are also on Mirena and none of us had ever had any problems.
