The only downside to this particular lube, aside from not having a verifiable CBD dose and being incompatible with latex condoms, is that some oils used in the formula are potential allergens, namely sunflower seed oil and sweet almond oil.

How We Made Our Picks & Features We Considered

When it comes to products that are going on your skin or in your body, we do not cut corners.

That goes for everything we test and review, but we took extra care in finding the best CBD lube.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a relatively new ingredient that has exploded in popularity over the past few years but it is not regulated by the FDA.

That means unscrupulous manufacturers could slap the letters “CBD” on anything and hike up the price without even needing to prove there’s any CBD in the product at all.

Additionally, brands and manufacturers freely make claims about what their CBD products can do — without providing any real data to back them up.

Combine that with the usual non-starters like glycerin, parabens, fragrances, dyes, or any additives that can cause problems for you and your junk, and we had our work cut out for us.

So, our researchers, under the advisement of our medical review board, selected lubes that could provide lab reports or a Certificate of Analysis (COA) to verify their CBD content.

We typically use a 25-point system of review, which involves almost 100 hours of testing that covers everything from the packaging aesthetics, to smell, taste, texture, performance, and cleanup.

For CBD lubes, however, we added an extra section focused on the CBD effects exclusively.

Some of those on our testing team are seasoned vets when it comes to cannabis products while others had limited experience — or none at all.

• And many others…

Although we can’t endorse products belonging to the companies mentioned above, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are poor products.

They didn’t meet our very strict criteria for ingredients, verification of CBD, and in the case of water-based CBD lubes, verification of body-safe pH and/or osmolality.

CBD Lubes We Tested — But Didn’t Recommend

When it comes to CBD lubricants, many factors contribute to whether a product is good for some people — but not others.

The effects of a CBD personal lubricant can be somewhat subjective, in our experience — with varied results based on the person, how much they applied, and the way the formula affects them individually.

You might need to try a few different CBD lubes before finding the perfect one — just like we did — but in the end, it’s well worth the effort.

• Joy Organics Organic CBD Massage Oil: This one was great as a massage oil, but not up to snuff as a lube. It washed off very easily during shower sex, absorbed quickly into the skin, and needed too-frequent reapplication.
• Quim Smooth Operator: With 100mg of full spectrum CBD, we liked it, but it didn’t “wow” us the way we were expecting it to. (Still, we love the product name and the artsy packaging, for sure.)
• Kiskanu Hemp CBD Intimacy Oil: Kiskanu’s CBD lube was fine. But just fine. It rinsed off too fast when we tested it in water and absorbed into the skin pretty quickly, but mostly it simply didn’t “wow” anyone on the testing team.
• Glissant: While we adored the chic top-shelf cosmetic look of the spray bottle, this one didn’t perform as well as we hoped. The double-edged sword of the packaging is that while it is discreet, there wasn’t any dosage info on the bottle itself.
• Flora + Bast Aphrodisia Intimate Arousal Oil: This was another case of being good, but not great. The lube needed reapplication thanks to it drying up quickly. I would like to commend them on devoting over 50% of their profits directly to the farmers and extractors, however.

That isn’t to say these aren’t good CBD lubricants, but we do set the bar rather high when it comes to choosing the best.

What To Know About CBD Lubes

With cannabidiol (CBD) being a relative newcomer to the world of lube, there are plenty of questions most people will have about this hemp-derived helper.

What Are CBD Lubes?

CBD lubes are sexual lubricants, typically oil-based, that contain cannabidiol, which is derived from cannabis — a plant most commonly known as marijuana.

In recent years, CBD has exploded in popularity as an ingredient used in tinctures, vapes, gummies, creams, and even dog treats as a remedy for everything from pain to mental health ailments.

CBD has a number of benefits that include relaxation, pain relief, increased blood flow, and anti-inflammation.

It’s like getting all of the benefits of weed without getting high, thanks to the lack of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive molecule in cannabis.

Some CBD lubes may have minuscule amounts of THC, but not enough to have an effect — or be outside of federal restrictions.

QULO, for example, has only 0.3% THC max per bottle with the typical amount being closer to 0.1% (0.12% according to lab reports we were given).

It should be noted that CBD lubricants are not the same as hemp seed oil lubes.

Although both contain ingredients derived from the cannabis plant, hemp oil is made from the seeds, rather than the stems, leaves, or flowers, and doesn’t have any CBD or THC in it.

For this reason, it can be difficult to find hemp-derived CBD products unless cannabidiols are added using an ingredient extracted from another part of the cannabis plant.

When Should You Use A CBD Lube?

You should grab a bottle of CBD lube when you:

• Are looking for extra sensation
• Want a more relaxed vagina or anus during penetration
• Don’t necessarily plan to use latex toys, condoms, diaphragms, or dental dams (if oil based)
• Want a lube that can be used as a massage oil

Think of CBD lube as a regular lube with some pizzazz.

Is CBD Lube Safe?

CBD is safe for most people, even in a personal lubricant.

If you are pregnant, it is best to avoid using CBD products until speaking with your doctor, as cannabidiol can cross the placental barrier, potentially affecting the fetus.

When used as directed, CBD lube is as safe as can be for just about everyone else, but make sure to read the ingredients list to verify there are no ingredients (such as seed-based oils) that might cause an allergic reaction.

Oils used in CBD lubricant can include plant-derived essential oils, organic coconut oil or MCT coconut oil, shea butter, or cocoa butter, so if you or your partner have known sensitivities, they’re best avoided.

Water-based CBD lube may contain aloe vera gel, which is generally safe but those who have a latex allergy should proceed with caution, as the aloe plant contains natural latex.

There are additional safety considerations you should know about, however:

• When it contains glycerin or parabens: These can cause a myriad of issues such as upsetting your natural flora (promoting yeast infections) and can lead to an increased risk of infection.

Although many CBD lubes are oil-based, some use water-based formulas.

Does CBD Lube Make You High Or Fail A Drug Test?

No, CBD lube won’t get you high and it shouldn’t cause you to fail a drug test.

CBD, in general, won’t get you high because it doesn’t contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the molecule responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

The whole reason CBD has become adopted by so many people is because you get the benefits of cannabis without getting stoned.

There are CBD-derived products like Delta-8 or HHC that provide a similar effect to marijuana, but those are typically found in specially bred flowers, vapes, and edibles like gummies or soda.

Even QULO’s itty-bitty amount of THC isn’t going to get you high.

• Will CBD Lube Show Up On A Drug Test?

According to ArcPoint Labs, one of the largest drug testing companies in the US, CBD will not show up on a drug test.

This is because, frankly, they don’t test for it.

Drug tests look for traces of THC, which is different from CBD.

Some CBD lubricants, like QULO, contain a trace of THC but it shouldn’t be an issue — you’re being exposed to very little.

If you use a lot of it, or often, it is possible (but still very unlikely) that a small amount of THC will show up on a drug test.

This is way more likely to occur with other products like a CBD joint or cookie — because you consume the whole thing — and not CBD lubes, as you use only a few squirts and not the entire bottle at once.

That said, everyone’s body metabolizes THC differently.

While it is unlikely that occasional use of a CBD lube with <0.3% THC will pop up on a drug screen, double-check the product label to look for mentions of THC if you’re concerned.
