If you’re on the hunt for a personal lubricant that can last even longer than silicone or water-based lubes, oil-based sex lubes might be exactly what you need for your next marathon romp with your partner.

Fun Fact:

  • Oil-based lubes will degrade condoms made from latex or polyisoprene — which can put you or your partner at risk for STI transmission or unintended pregnancy.
  • Many oil-based lubricants double as sexy massage oils! For that matter, in our experience, they also make fantastic oil treatments for your hair and skin, and can even work well as make-up removers. (We’re all about multi-tasking!)

Beating silicone lubes in just about every aspect possible, oil-based lubricants are often passed over — and that’s a shame.

They are just as waterproof and ideal for shower sex, but they last longer — requiring even fewer reapplications — and are generally made from natural oils often derived from organic sources.

All the benefits of a silicone lubricant in a natural, body-friendly product?

Bring it on!

After more than 83 hours of cumulative research and personal testing, we’ve concluded AH! YES OB and Coconu are the best personal lubricants available for sensitive skin.

We’ll share our other top recommendations, along with what makes a truly great oil-based personal lubricant.

Our Research, Testing & Review Methodology:

  • Oil-Based Lube Requirements: 100% body-safe ingredients (organic when possible); trustworthy brand; FDA approval; quality formula that enhances vaginal and/or anal sex; longevity during use; and a user-friendly mess-free bottle design.

Alison Huff, our editor-in-chief, personally reviewed AH! YES OB.

“AH! YES OB is incredibly slippery. Surprisingly, it wasn’t greasy and once I washed it off, my skin was left feeling velvet-soft and nourished,” she said.

“As someone who’s going through perimenopause and dealing with occasional bouts of hormone-induced dryness, this lubricant felt completely natural and left no stickiness behind.”

“Basically, a good oil-based lube is like a luxurious face mask — for your genitals. They’re fun to use and leave your skin feeling smooth as silk,” she added.

AH! YES OB hits all the right spots and it’s one of the best lubes available — featuring a texture that’s soft and slippery, with a consistency that’s thick enough to be used for vaginal or anal sex.

This product features an organic blend of oils that works well in so many situations because it’s incredibly long-lasting and hydrating.

The bonus for those who prefer to avoid products with heavy scents? It’s completely odor-free — not to mention it’s a top pick for those with sensitive skin.

Not only does AH! YES OB feel amazing on your skin during and after use, but its ingredients are equally as impressive.

It’s made with shea butter and vitamin E, both of which help to reduce friction while also ensuring your delicate skin is left feeling supple after use.

Additionally, this product is certified as 99% organic by the Soil Association, a UK-based organization that helps to set international organic quality standards for a variety of goods, produce, and products.

What more could you want in an oil-based sex lubricant?

Like all oil-based lubricants on our list, AH! YES OB should not be used with condoms made from latex or polyisoprene. It is only safe for those made from polyurethane, nitrile, or lambskin.

Additionally, it isn’t safe for latex diaphragms or dental dams; in fact, its thick texture makes it a poor choice of oral sex lube — there are safer edible and flavored options available.

Those caveats aside, the ingredients used in this product are safe — particularly for those with sensitive skin — so you can focus on what’s important — your pleasure.

Also Good: Coconu Oil-Based Lubricant

Coconu Oil-Based Lubricant
5.0
$24.99 (3 oz.)
Pros:
  • 7 USDA Certified Organic Oils & Butters
  • Doubles As A Massage Oil
  • Protects & Moisturizes Delicate Skin
  • Long-Lasting, Non-Greasy
  • Edible, No GMOs
Cons:
  • Not Condom Compatible
Bottom Line: With a very light shea butter scent, this smooth oil-based lubricant melts into the skin (but is never runny OR sticky) and a little goes a long way. If you're looking for a natural lube that lasts like a silicone but rocks an organic formula, Coconu is one of our team's absolute faves.
$22.99 @ SheVibe

Coconu is one of the most well-known brands when it comes to natural personal lubricants — and for good reason.

Boasting SEVEN organic ingredients (sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, cacao seed butter, kukui seed oil, and sea buckthorn oil) and a texture that’s silky smooth, Coconu Oil-Based Lubricant offers long-lasting, deeply-hydrating moisture.

Doubling as a massage oil, this lube has a non-greasy consistency that absorbs into the skin easily, yet it protects and nourishes even the driest and most sensitive skin.

We loved how well this oil-based lubricant performed during both vaginal and anal sex — and the gender-neutral packaging is very nondescript.

If you saw this on someone’s bathroom counter, you’d assume it’s nothing more than a really nice hand cream.

(Which, you can totally use it as one — it’s just that good.)

Although oil-based lubricants are generally not edible because they have a thick texture that’s potentially a choking hazard, Coconu Oil-Based is light enough to be swallowed safely.

It doesn’t have added fragrance (but does have a very light shea butter scent) and in our experience cleans up pretty easily.

Overall, the rich, soothing formula is hands-down a top pick for those on our team who tried it.

Lux Pick: AH YES COCO Oil-Based Lube

AH! YES COCO
4.8
$18.99 (6 Applications)
Pros:
  • Organic Coconut, Jojoba & Sunflower Oils
  • Nourishing Formula Soothes & Protects
  • 2-in-1 Vaginal Moisturizer & Lube
  • Long-Lasting During Intimacy
  • Natural-Feeling Texture
Cons:
  • Only Available In Pre-Filled Applicators
  • Expensive Per Use Vs. Others
  • Not Condom Compatible
Bottom Line: AH! YES has done it again, crafting an amazingly luxurious oil-based lube using only the best organic ingredients. Formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions, COCO is smooth to the touch, long-lasting, and feels natural. It's only available in pre-filled, sealed applicators, which can be a hassle — but they do keep the product über fresh and we certainly can't complain about that.
$16.14 @ AH! YES –> CODE: WHI $20.99 @ SheVibe

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of AH! YES products so we weren’t all that surprised by COCO — we kinda knew it was going to be awesome, and it is.

Designed to relieve symptoms of vaginal dryness while doubling as a luxuriously moisturizing personal lubricant, AH! YES COCO creates a protective barrier on the skin while infusing it with deep hydration.

The long-lasting formula is incredibly soothing and for those on our team who are dealing with perimenopause- or menopause-related dryness, it’s a boon.

The only drawbacks (and why we rated it slightly below its sister product, AH! YES OB) are related to the packaging — and the price per use.

As of this writing, COCO is only offered in pre-filled applicators — which isn’t necessarily the end of the world but for those of us who like to decide for ourselves how much lube we need, it’s less than ideal.

They’re also a little fiddly, and if you’re concerned about excess waste in landfills…well, they are plastic.

Beyond the applicators, however, is the price-per-application — and the reason why we selected AH! YES COCO as our lux pick.

Hopefully one day (maybe soon), this nourishing lubricant will be available in a bottle that’s a little more cost-effective for those shopping on a budget.

As it stands, COCO costs about $3 per application — and that’s a little rich for some.

Budget Pick: Bloomi Delight Oil-Based Lube

Budget Pick
Bloomi Delight

  • Hydrating Deep Moisture Relieves Vaginal Dryness
  • 2-In-1 Vaginal Moisturizer & Lubricant
  • Long-Lasting During Intimacy, Natural-Feeling Texture
  • Made With Sustainable Packaging
Cons:
  • Not Condom Compatible
Bottom Line: With a silky smooth texture and a light scent that reminds us of a warm summer day, Delight lives up to its name in every way. The moisturizing formula feels amazing on your skin (it even doubles as a hand cream in a pinch). Featuring organic ingredients and a budget-friendly price (despite its high-end appearance), this oil-based lube is a must-have.
$15.00 @ Bloomi

Made from organic ingredients that include coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and cocoa seed butter, Bloomi’s Delight was a surprise pick — but a pleasant one.

Although there is no added fragrance, the ingredients have a light scent that reminds us of a warm summer day and with a texture that’s smooth and velvety, it melts into the skin.

Designed to provide long-lasting hydration while soothing delicate skin, it even doubles as a rich hand cream in a pinch.

As one of the most affordable oil-based lubes made from natural, trusted ingredients, this a fantastic option for anyone who is careful about what they’re putting on (or in) their body — and how much they’re pulling out of their wallet.

And if you’re environmentally conscious, Delight is packaged in a sustainable carton and the sugarcane tube is recyclable.

How We Made Our Picks & Features We Considered

ah yes ob oil-based lube on fingertip with bottle in the background

When choosing an oil-based personal lubricant, the first thing to look for is a list of safe ingredients without additives that you are allergic to or sensitive to.

Many oil-based products use ingredients derived from nuts, seeds, or other natural sources that can be allergens for many, so it’s important to check the label carefully.

Additionally, you should always opt for a lubricant that is FDA-approved.

The final consideration is how that lube performs in the bedroom.

All of these factors are reflected in our ratings.

When choosing the best oil-based lubricants, we considered:

  • Safe Ingredients: It is always better to use lubes with a limited list of high-quality natural ingredients that won’t cause irritation. Although most oil-based lubricants do not include glycerin (which can cause yeast infections) or parabens, (which may possibly lead to endocrine disruption), they should always be avoided.
  • Allergens: This is always an important consideration, particularly for oil-based lubricants, because they so often use oils derived from nuts, seeds, or other natural sources that can be allergens. Always read the product label thoroughly to examine ingredients and we highly suggest doing a patch test of any new lubricant on your inner elbow to watch for reactions before applying it to your genitals.
  • Additives: It is always best to select an oil-based lubricant with a short ingredient list that is free from added fragrances or dyes that may irritate delicate vaginal or anal tissue.
  • Formulation: It’s important to consider the way a lube is formulated and how its ingredients fit together.
  • Texture/Consistency: Oil-based lubricants have an incredibly slippery texture that is often thick, but can be more lightweight, depending on their formula. Although they don’t tend to feel similar to your body’s natural lubrication, we considered the thickness of each lube, selecting a range to suit a variety of preferences — including one that’s thin enough to be used during oral sex.
  • Performance: Finally, we considered the performance of each lubricant we included in our list of recommendations. This factor is only considered after a product passes each of the criteria above because if it isn’t completely body-safe, the way it performs doesn’t matter.

Oil-Based Lubes That Didn’t Make Our List

We examined dozens of oil-based personal lubricants from several well-known brands, screening them based on their ingredient lists — primarily the types of oils used — before selecting a handful to test in person.

Lubes that we researched but did not consider for testing included:

  • Astroglide O
  • Woo More Play
  • Coco Bliss
  • Lube Life
  • Doc Johnson
  • Boy Butter
  • Body Connection
  • And many others…

Oil-Based Lubricants We Tested — But Didn’t Recommend

Although our product testing list for oil-based lubricants was much shorter compared to other types of lubricants we tried, we were highly selective and our testing team needed to agree unanimously on inclusions.

We also tried a number of CBD oil-based lubes but those were reviewed separately.

The oil-based products below are not necessarily bad personal lubricants, however, they didn’t “wow” our product testers enough to win a recommendation.

  • Organic Glide: We’ll be honest — this one had been on our list of recommendations for quite a while because we loved the texture and performance. That said, we continuously test new products and sometimes they end up being ones we like a lot more.
  • Chiavaye: Although made from natural oils (and on that note, it makes a fantastic hair treatment), this oil-based lube is exceedingly runny. We also didn’t love the glass bottle; although it has a pump, it drips — which makes the bottle slippery and generally a bit of a pain to use.

What To Know About Oil-Based Lubes

ah yes ob with its box on a red tabletop with plants

We’re not going to lie — the selection of oil-based lubricants is considerably smaller when compared to the overwhelming number of water-based and silicone-based lubes available.

Although they may not seem popular at first glance, there are many reasons why an oil-based lubricant may be exactly what you’re looking for.

What Are Oil-Based Lubes?

For a lubricant to be classified as oil-based, it has to be primarily made up of oils.

Oil-based lubes are often derived from plants, although sometimes synthetic oils or other added ingredients, like vitamin E, may be included.

Oil-based lubes may contain any of the following:

  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Cocoa butter
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Almond oil (or sweet almond oil)
  • CBD oil
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Sunflower seed oil
  • Shea butter
  • Other body-safe oils not listed here

All of the oils listed above are not only safe as lube ingredients in oil-based lubes, but they are safe when used as lube alternatives on their own.

Additionally, some oil-based lubes may also include small amounts of safe non-oil ingredients, such as aloe vera gel or beeswax, which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

    Who Should Use Oil-Based Lubes?

Oil-based lubricants are perfect for anyone who is looking for a long-lasting lube that’s made from natural (and/or organic) body-safe ingredients — but they’re not ideal for everyone.

You might enjoy an oil-based lube if you:

    • Want a product that lasts as long as silicone but is made from natural ingredients
    • Need a waterproof personal lubricant
    • Are not using latex or polyisoprene condoms, as oils will degrade these
    • Are not using sex toys made from latex or rubber (oils will break these down, too)
    • Want a lubricant that’s soothing and/or improves hydration to combat vaginal dryness
    • Are not prone to yeast infections
    • Are not allergic to any of the ingredients (particularly if nut- or seed-based)

When Should You Use An Oil-Based, Silicone, Or Water-Based Lube?

Oil-based lubricants are fantastic, but that doesn’t make them ideal for every sexual situation.

If you’re not sure whether oil-based lubes are best for you or your needs, it’s important to consider what those are — and read through the comparison table below.

Pros And Cons Of Personal Lubricants Made From Oils

As we mentioned before, oil-based lubricants are often overlooked in favor of water or silicone lubes — which is a travesty as far as we’re concerned because they’re so versatile.

We discovered that when it comes to oil-based products, there are important pros and cons to consider.

Pros Of Using Oil-Based Personal Lubricants:

    • They are long-lasting, surpassing even those made from silicone
    • They are waterproof and won’t rinse away when used during penetrative sex in the bath or shower
    • They tend to have a thicker texture, although some formulas are more lightweight to suit a variety of personal preferences
    • They are generally made with fewer and naturally-derived ingredients
    • They are versatile enough to be used for vaginal and anal sex, which isn’t always the case with water-based lubes
    • Because they are made from oils, these lubricants are incredibly hydrating
    • Oil-based lubes are generally compatible with most high-quality silicone sex toys
    • They can often double as massage oils, making them ideal for erotic massage and sex

Cons Of Using Oil-Based Personal Lubricants

    • They will degrade condoms made from latex or polyisoprene
    • They will also degrade latex diaphragms and dental dams, although most oil-based lubes shouldn’t be used during oral sex because their thickness can pose a choking hazard
    • Compared to other types of lubricants, oil-based products are the most likely to contain ingredients that are potential allergens
    • They feel noticeably different when compared to your body’s natural lubrication, which may be a turn-off for some
    • Most will stain fabrics — easily
    • They aren’t water-soluble and can be more difficult to remove from skin after use
    • Because they don’t include hydroxyethylcellulose, you may prefer to use water-based lubes if you’re trying to conceive

Do Oil-Based Lubes Have pH Or Osmolality?

Unless they contain water or water-based ingredients, oil-based lubes don’t have a pH level or osmolality range.

Since pH measures how acidic or basic a water-based solution is, oil-based lubricants don’t have a real measurement of pH.

Likewise, osmolality refers to the concentration of particles dissolved into water and as such, is a factor that does not typically concern oil-based lubes.

Though there are ways to measure the pH of a solution that doesn’t contain water, these methods won’t work for everything and also don’t guarantee an accurate result.

    Is Oil-Based Lube Safe?

Yes, they are safe when used as directed — but there are some very important caveats to consider first.

Many oil-based lubricants use ingredients that are derived from nuts, seeds, or other natural sources that may be potential allergens for some.

Before using an oil-based lubricant on your genital skin, you should apply it to a patch of skin on the inside of your arm to watch for reactions or signs of sensitivity — even if you don’t currently have any known allergies or sensitivities.

Additionally, you should avoid swallowing most oil-based lubes, as they may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea — and their thick consistency can also cause choking or coughing during oral sex.

Additional oil-based lube safety concerns to consider:

    • If you’re trying to conceive: Generally, lubes that are created to aid in conception include hydroxyethylcellulose as a key ingredient because it closely resembles vaginal mucus and won’t inhibit sperm mobility — and you’ll most likely find that ingredient in water-based lubes, not those made from oil.
    • If you’re pregnant: In general, personal lubricants are safe to use during pregnancy, however, the hormonal shifts that take place during pregnancy increase your risk of yeast infections and oil-based lubes can exacerbate this.
    • If you’re prone to yeast infections: For those susceptible to frequent vaginal infections, oil-based lubricants are a little more difficult to remove after use and may increase your risk of developing another infection if applied vaginally. If you regularly experience vaginal infections and aren’t sure whether oil-based lubes are right for you, we advise that you talk to your OB-GYN or primary care physician first.
    • If you’re using condoms: Oil-based lubes will break down latex diaphragms and condoms made from latex or polyisoprene. They are only compatible with those made from polyurethane, nitrile, or lambskin, the latter of which won’t protect you from STIs.
    • Expiration: Oil-based lubricants can and will eventually expire — and they’re only safe to use as long as they have not reached their expiration, which can vary from 1 to 3 years depending on their storage and the amount of time that’s passed since they were first opened. Oils tend to smell “rancid” when they go bad, so if you notice any changes in the smell, texture, or color of your oil-based lube, throw it away.

    Closing Thoughts

Oil-based personal lubricants are amazing because they’re plant-based and last longer than other lubes — even those made from silicone!

Of those, it’s important to know which ones are safest — and why — so you can make an informed decision about the best ones to try.
