My question is this: When or if you tell your partner that you have cheated. To me, if it was a one-off, and by that I mean something that happened by mistake and will not happen again, I wouldn't want my SO to tell me about it. Ignorance is bliss. If the only reason she is telling me is to assuage her guilt, live with the guilt. She should carry the guilt around for her penance. Don't ruin my life and make me live the experience because you want to unburden yourself. To me, it is just plain cruel.
That said, if the reason for the affair affects her feelings about the relationship (which I would put Chaya's situation being in love with her friend), then she MUST tell me and we can patch the hole in the relationship and move on or split up. My usual belief is that affairs are symptoms of a bad relationship and not the cause (just like the lack of intimacy). They can be worked through and a better relationship can evolve.
