If you want to look up studies by women on why men masturbate, or talk to men who are sympathetic to women on why men masturbate, you're going to get skewed data. What you're really asking for isn't an answer as to why, but a pat on the back that it isn't your fault and that something is wrong with the guy.
Masturbation itself is healthy. Always. You can't catch anything from it, and as well as feeling good, it relieves tension. For a guy to masturbate, it usually means he's horny. If I'm in the mood and ask my SO for sex and she isn't in the mood, guess what: I'm going to masturbate. If she doesn't like it, too bad. Just like if she's in the mood and I turn her down she's totally welcome to handle her business.
If men did everything the way women wanted them to do them, we'd be women, not men. I hate all the cuddly stuff, and all the drama a lot of women seem to be into. I hate Sex in the City, and Little Women, and American Idol. I hope Perez Hilton's website gets shut down. But that's all because I'm a guy. Most guys aren't into that stuff. I don't expect women to be into porn, horror movies, or playing first person shooter video games online. I don't expect them to want to go play Texas Hold'Em at the casino with me or go race cars. There are differences between the sexes. And any guy who is "in sync" totally with his wife/girlfriend and likes things like Sex in the City, just isn't right.
I also don't think it's wrong for a man to want to do things that his SO doesn't want to do. Why can't he fantasize about them? My ex wanted me to tie her up in the woods and have sex with her. Never happened. I had one girlfriend who wanted to do the rape fantasy. Never happened. Should I have put either of them down if they masturbated to the idea? No, why would I?
As for being young, yeah I guess I am young. I'm 37.....
And as for us doing all the work, how often do any of you stay on top the entire time you have sex? I'd love to just lie back and enjoy the ride. But it usually starts out with a few hundred push-ups doing it missionary style, then it winds up being a few hundred thrusts doing it doggie-style, then it usually switches to standing up with the girl bent over doing more thrusts, then if I'm lucky I get to lie back and enjoy the woman on top. At that point my knees, thighs, and legs are all tired from all the activity. So yeah, I do think we do most if not all of the work. God forbid a guy lose his erection during the act, then it's an argument about A) the guy not being able to stay hard, B) the girl not being enough C) How she can play with a toy with no problems. Again, if she get's dry during then it becomes about the man not exciting her enough instead of it being her fault for not staying wet. The same arguments never seem to apply to women.
If you want fair answers you have to look at the situation from both sides. You can't just point fingers and ask why men do certain things then not listen to the answers.

you see, in your experience it may be that you do all the work sexually... but it isn't the case for many women.
