As i read this column, I see a trend (myself included); you and many othes say that he is a little unconfortable doing this in front of you (at first).
I beleive this is definately a holdover from earlier years - growing up if a guy was caught masterbating, he would be ridiculed by friends, schoolmates, or whomever found out about it, or suspected it.
