I had the merena IUD inserted at my 6 week check up. the insertion was a breeze (thanks to just having a baby) but I bled forever. For four months I went from bleeding bright red, to draining brown water, to red, to brown... back and forth for 4 months. I swore to give it 6 months, because they say it takes that long to get through the problems. Well, at 4 months, I finally quit bleeding. YIPPEE!!! I was still dealing with crampiness, sudden sharp pains in my ovary/uterus area, and my husband complaining about feeling the string. He said it actually hurt. Well, the time came for my period and instead of being lighter and easier, it has been awful!!! Not only have I had to suffer with the pain and misery of it, I pass clots that are unusually large... multiple small ones. I gush blood at times. and this had gone on for nearly a month again. I started with the bleeding then went to a muddy looking discharge, then back to the heavy bleeding again. The first of June will be 6 months. After that, Im taking this sucker out. Of course, now comes the delima of what type of birth control to take.... or to go ahead and have my tubes tied.. which is what I wanted to avoid in the first place.

Water Retention with Mirena
I had a Mirena IUD put in 6 weeks ago. Within 1 week, my weight had shot up 9 pounds. I couldn't even get my rings off. I could tell that I was not urinating enough, because I drink a lot of water anyway. I called my doctor, and she said this couldn't be caused by the IUD. I told her that according to women posting on the Internet, it does cause water retention and weight gain. She told me to drink a lot of water and call her back in a week. I toughed it out for one month and went to see her. I am the type of person whose weight stays pretty constant so I knew something was wrong. At the one month mark, she gave me diuretics and told me that she was sure it was transitional and to give it another month. She said that she has a Mirena herself, and she has never had anyone to have this problem. I told her to get on the Internet and look around. She had just been relying on the package insert. It has been 2 weeks since I saw her, and the diuretics only seem to work on some days. My weight is still on a rollercoaster. Some days I feel bloated and uncomfortable. All I have to do is look at my fingers to know before I even step on the scales. I am seriously thinking about having it taken out and having my tubes tied. I'm don't think this is going to be a transitional problem for me. I think it may be permanent as long as I have it in.Comment

Maybe the doctors that put your IUD in didn't do it properly or it sounds like they were'nt cautious when it came to using disinfected tools...or maybe the nurses didn't do their job properly. Either way it sounds like the infections were PUT in with your IUD. I am sorry that you all had to go through this because mine has been in for 2 months and besides the occassional cramp (which my doc warned me about) or the occassional bleeding, I've been as happy as can be with it
My sex drive is up, if anything, since there isn't the worry of pregnancy...and I don't feel depressed. In fact, my other doc, to whom I've gone to speak about my PMS has told me that with Mirena it would eventually probalby help, because it levels your hormones.
My doc warned me on the Copper IUD!!! and I'm happy I paid the extra bucks for Mirena.
Yeast infections are easy enough to get, sometimes from certain drugs, sometimes from your partner who hasn't been faithful, sometimes from your too many baths and not enough cleaning the bathtub!
I live with a pharmacist
If he didn't think Mirena safe for me, he would not have bought it for me!!
If I were all you, I'd go talk to another gyno and get his opinion on your experience. I wouldn't be surprised if your infections and pain was due to your doctor's incompetance. My pharmacist man deals with those kind EVERY DAY! Not all doctors are good at doctoring...
unfortunatelly.

stop using condoms after insertion of IUD?
I talked to my pharmacist man and he said that most likely your yeast infections are being given to you by your husband/boyfriend. Usually when you stop using condoms and go 'natural', there are bacteria on the man's penis that may be directly causing your yeast infections...is that possible?Comment

Anyone tried Lady Comp?
Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences with the IUD. I have been debating one for awhile as it is basically my last resort. However, hormonal birth control doesn't work for me and so I would have to get the copper Paragard IUD if I were to go ahead with it. But I already have chronic yeast infections and from the sound of it, this would more than likely make matters worse and that is the last thing I want. But then what?? I see that there are more of you out there with the same problem. But I was searching around on the internet the other day and found something called lady comp. It sounds awesome and I thought some of you might be interested in it as well. At least it is another option, right? It looks pricey, but lasts up to 10 years (which comes up to $5.00/mo) and over the long run would pay for itself over and over again. And they have payment plans through pay pal to make it easier to purchase if you don't have all of the cash righ upfront - like me. Anyway, it is basically a contraception computer that is very high tech and supposed to be as effective as the pill. Just google lady-comp and you will find tons of information on it along with lots of testimonials and reviews on it from other women who swear by it! Good luck! I plan on getting mine this week!Comment

paraguard iud
i have had my paraguard iud for over 3 years now. i had it inserted after my 2 pregnancy with my 3rd daughter. i had my midwife insert it in her office. no problem. was not any more uncomfortable than some routine examines have been. i really have not had any problems with any extra infections pain or irregular bleeding. i can't remember the specifics after the insertion but i know there was nothing that sticks out as being something i was concerned about. i know i had to get it checked awhile after insertion to make sure it stayed and was placed properly, everything checked out fine. i would highly recommend anyone seriously interested but scared to look into seeing a midwife. my experience with my midwifery practice has always been wonderful. they are affiliated with a major hospital and work closely with an ob/gyn practice also affiliated with the same hospital. i would never go back to a regular ob/gyn as my primary health provider for ob/gyn. my midwives have always given me more support and a higher level of bedside manner. my husband was uncircumsized up until a few months ago, being uncircumsized he had to keep himself very clean as to not have issues arise from being uncircumsized. many uncircumsized men have found smell, irritation and infection to be constant problems, even with excellent personal hygiene, when concerning their penis. i noticed my husband cleaning himself a lot and since he was the first uncircumsized man i was with it was odd to me. i mean he would instantly go to the bathroom after sex, he is not obsessive and actually pretty lazy, i never understood the reason for intense cleaning until we were doing reaserch on adult male circumsicion. the reason i talk about it is maybe if the women who are having issues with constant infection it just may increased due to your husband not keeping his penis as clean as need be to help deter the unwanted bacteria from becoming a problem. not talking about being dirty, don't get offended. just saying i know there are women who have issues with vaginal irritation and infection to begin with, my best friend has had problems for years, single, in sexual relationships, it didn't matter, the vaginal issues were always there. i am sure the penis size has a lot to do with things as well, nevermind hormonal depending on what iud you have. take care.Comment

at least im not the only one
thank God Im not the only person having issues with the merena iud. I had mine put in a year and a half ago, 6 weeks after the birth of my son. The insertion was no big deal, expecially compared to previous experienced at the GYN. about two months after I got it, I started getting acne. I have never had acne. Its horrible. they say that there is minimal weight gian with the IUD cause its localized hormones. BULL! i wegh more now than i did 2 WEEKS after i had my son. I think that the worst part of it is the sex. my drive is still there but its almost impossible to climax. and not only that my husband says sometimes after sex that "it's the meanest creature that God ever created and now yours has teeth" he said it hurts him! or as he says it "bites" him. i thought it was nice at first barely having a period. but i would rather have one than have all the side effects that the doctors say dont exist...being ticked off all the time is another major one. anyway im sorry that other people are having issues too but i am glad that im not crazy thinkin its just me.
