In A Hurry? Here’s Why We’re Recommending The Mainstream Female Urination Device

Have you ever been camping, at a music festival, or anywhere outdoors when you had to pee — like really pee — and your only option was a nasty porta-potty?

Or maybe you’ve given in to the call of nature, trying to squat behind a tree only to end up peeing all over your feet.

That’s just the worst!

Luckily, the people at Awkward Essentials have your back — or rather, your front — with their new urinary device: A cardboard pee funnel called the Mainstream!

This is a very simple product — a plastic pouch holds a cardboard funnel and two healthy squares of toilet paper that let you go when you need to go.

I personally tested the Mainstream before it was available to the public and was genuinely surprised by how much I liked it.

As a female, having to pee at an inconvenient time is a huge bummer.

Raise your hand if you’ve been on road trips with long stretches of highway and no rest stop in sight. And if you do wind up a rest stop or worse — a gas station bathroom — oh the horror!

They can be really disgusting.

Unfortunately, we don’t all have penises we can whip out on the side of the road while turning our backs to passing cars.

No…if you have a vulva, you have to put on a whole bottomless show that can be embarrassing — and not to mention messy if your squatting game isn’t up to snuff.

When I first heard about the Mainstream from Awkward Essentials, I was very intrigued.

Something that allows women to pee easily while standing up sounds like a great invention, but does it actually work? I was determined to find out.

What Is The Awkward Essentials Mainstream And How Does It Work?

Photograph Of The Mainstream's Packaging, The Pee Funnel, And Two Folded Pieces Of Toilet Paper

The Mainstream is a disposable urine funnel for women and anyone who wants to be able to pee while standing up and cannot easily do so, whether due to their anatomy or mobility.

While female urination devices aren’t a new invention, the Mainstream from Awkward Essentials is designed to be portable and discreet so you can use it anywhere with ease.

How Does The Mainstream Work?

The Mainstream works by unfolding into a long funnel shape that slips between your legs and beneath your vulva, catching urine and directing the flow away from your body — much like a penis would.

By holding the funnel in place during urination, anyone can pee while standing upright, anywhere and anytime.

What Makes The Mainstream A Great Product?

The Mainstream comes with some pretty nifty features that make it a stand-out product if you’re looking for a portable, disposable female urinary device.

→ Mainstream’s Features Include:

  • Discreet packaging that’s easily portable
  • A leak-proof cardboard funnel that’s simple to use
  • Toilet paper for wiping yourself afterward

Honestly, I can’t believe women have been going about their lives without this unique urinary device on hand.

For anyone with a vulva or who must sit down to use the bathroom, finding a sanitary place to urinate while on the go is a real public health problem.

You have to contend with sitting on dirty toilet seats in public restrooms or porta-potties, especially if no disposable covers are within reach.

If you decide to hover over the toilet seat instead, you’re getting a decent thigh workout but you might also find yourself cleaning your pee off of the seat afterward…along with anything else that was on the seat before you got there.

Additionally, if you’re out in the world with no bathroom in sight, what do you do, and more importantly — where do you go?

For these reasons and many others, a product like the Mainstream is nothing short of revolutionary!

The Mainstream contains everything you need in a flat, discreet package.

Each one provides a single-use leak-proof pee funnel and toilet paper for wiping up afterward. Simply use it — and throw it away when you’re done.

This is helpful not just for campers or music festival partiers looking for a clean place to pee, but it’s useful in plenty of other situations too.

The Mainstream makes peeing easier for anyone who needs a little extra help with mobility, including those who are pregnant, have had a recent surgical procedure, have a disability, or bladder issues that result in frequent urination.

It takes the pain out of having to awkwardly position yourself just to go to the bathroom!

Additionally, transgender folks who want to pee while standing up can do so with ease, allowing them to live their best lives, too.

What makes the Mainstream fantastic is its portability.

As we mentioned earlier, pee funnels are not exactly “new” inventions but many of them are crafted from hard plastic that is meant to be used again and again — which means you not only have to carry it wherever you go, but you have to clean it after each use.

You don’t have to fuss with any of that nonsense when you use the Mainstream.

Every part of this product is designed to be used one time and disposed of afterward, plus it comes in a small, discreet package that can be tucked inside a purse, glove box, or even a back pocket if it’s big enough.

The entire package is .04 oz in weight. Folded, the Mainstream is 3.5” long and 3.25” tall, extending to 9.25” long and 2.5” tall when fully opened and made hollow before use.

The Pros And Cons Of The Awkward Essentials Mainstream

Photograph Of Julia's Hands Opening The Awkward Essentials Mainstream Over Wooden Tabletop

After trying the Mainstream myself, I thought it had way more pros than cons. I mean, how could you not like a product that gives you the freedom to pee without ever having to use a public bathroom?

Even if it’s a little…well, awkward.

Still, let’s weigh the pros and cons.

The Pros Of The Awkward Essentials Mainstream

  • It features small, discreet packaging
  • It is completely disposable
  • It’s helpful for anyone with mobility issues
  • It’s good for post-surgical patients
  • It’s helpful for pregnant women
  • It’s easily used by transgender people who prefer to stand while urinating
  • No more squatting
  • No more hiding behind a bush
  • No more getting pee on your shoes or clothes

The Cons Of The Awkward Essentials Mainstream

  • It doesn’t provide a way to wash your hands
  • It can feel really strange to pee while standing up if you’re not used to that

I love that the Mainstream is single-use, recyclable, and disposable — eco-friendliness is a big pro in my book.

And being able to avoid unsanitary conditions on a public toilet seat where you could pick up some random skin infection is a gift!

And seriously, if I have to look at one more pee-covered toilet seat during intermission at a concert, I’m gonna lose it.

The standing up part of using the Mainstream feels strange if I’m being honest, but once you get going, it’s easy.

And now I can write my name in the snow. Life-long dream fulfilled!

If the Mainstream is missing one thing, it would be an antibacterial hand wipe or hand sanitizer for the finale — but nothing’s perfect.

Is The Awkward Essentials Mainstream Safe?

Photograph Of The Awkward Essentials Mainstream Pee Funnel And Its Packaging

The Mainstream funnel is made from sturdy cardboard that can handle even a long pee stream without becoming soggy during use.

It also includes a couple of squares of toilet paper.

The pouch everything comes in is made from plastic so you can tuck the funnel and the used toilet paper inside afterward — without having to worry about pee soaking through it before disposal.

Whatever you do, don’t try to flush the Mainstream down the toilet — it is not flushable!

You might be concerned about the idea of putting anything against your vulva or genitals, particularly if you’re worried about bacterial infections.

Each Mainstream is individually packaged in a plastic wrapper so it doesn’t come into contact with anything but your own hands before use.

It’s completely safe to stand up while peeing, although it will likely feel pretty strange at first. That said, just make sure you hold the Mainstream during use so you can direct the flow of urine away from your feet.

Mainstream Vs. Shewee, GoGirl And Others

Collage Of Four Competing Pee Funnel Products: Sheewee, GoGirl, SaniGirl, And Pee Pocket

As I mentioned earlier, pee funnels are nothing new — there are a few other female urination devices out there, and they’re all booming in sales.

Apparently, women are embracing the stand-to-pee position. This is not shocking if you’ve ever been in a campground outhouse!

One of the most well-known products, the Shewee, works the same way as the Mainstream, but it’s made of plastic and you’re supposed to re-use it, not throw it out.

The same thing goes for GoGirl, which is made from soft medical-grade silicone and also not disposable.

Yeah, that doesn’t do it for me.

I don’t want to pee and then have to carry around a dirty pee funnel until I get home, nor do I want to wash it in a public bathroom sink.

That said, Shewee also offers a Peebol that is disposable, but it isn’t a funnel. Instead, it turns liquid into a biodegradable gel that can be thrown away after it’s full. I haven’t tried it.

The closest product comparison I found to the Mainstream is the Pee Pocket, although it only provides one piece of toilet paper (versus the two you get with the Mainstream) and the end that catches urine is a little on the short side — which might lead to unhappy accidents during use.

The SaniGirl has a similar design flaw — and it doesn’t come with toilet paper at all. Instead, you jiggle it a bit and “slide it forward along the skin to remove any remaining drop.”

No, thanks!

I have to say the Mainstream provides everything you could want in a portable, disposable urinary device. Who knew?

In Conclusion

I have to say this product is pretty genius.

The thought of never having to use a porta-potty again is enough for me to buy hundreds of Mainstreams!

Not only will it ensure that my pristine buttcheeks can avoid dirty public toilet seats, but I also won’t return home from another camping trip with poison ivy in my crack because I squatted in the wrong place.

Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt.

Mainstream, where have you been all my life?

It’s also nice that this little device can be helpful for so many people who need support, as well — including those with mobility issues, disabilities, transgender folks, and anyone who wants to pee while standing.

If this is you — or even if you’re just merely curious — it’s worth giving the Mainstream a go!
