You didn't mess up the experience by being in pain. Most people are very nervous the first few times they have sex, and that tension leads to muscle tightening, which in turn can lead to pain when you're trying to have intercourse. Pain is not uncommon but it is also not what you're supposed to be feeling, so be sure to be careful and take things slowly. That means if your last time with him was also your first time having sex, then you might not necessarily want to jump to anal right away. Work on making intercourse more pleasurable and improving your skills, especially in regard to communicating what feels good to you and what doesn't.

There's no need to rush. Sex won't be going out of style any time soon, and if he's a good guy, he'll be willing to show some patience and not try to perform every act and position in one single session. So go with a pace that feels comfortable for you. After all, it's supposed to be an enjoyable experience.
