i used to have the same problem for many months and the doctor said it was most likely a chronic case of bacterial vaginosis. He gave me Metrogel and it would go away but then come right back. I didn't want to keep using Metrogel so I tried a more homeopathic approach and started douching with 1/5 cup of distilled water and 1/5 cup of peroxide once a day and upped my folic acid intake. It actually got remarkably better, however, when I would stop the douching it would come back. I finally realized that this is a ph balance issue and that maybe my water intake during the day wasn't sufficient enough to keep my vaginal ph as it should be. I started drinking 4-5 bottles (the 16.9 fl oz size) of water a day and saw an immediate improvement. I even stopped the douching altogether and am now just making sure I drink the 4-5 bottles of water a day and that alone has taken the problem away completely.

Things that have helped, things that have not

I have had a bad overgrowth of group b strep and various other bad bacteria for over a year. It got to the point where it was so bad I was constantly having UTI symptoms (bladder urgecy, frequency, burning, pressure feeling) and pain during sex. I have been nearly symptom-free after following the right treatments.

        here's what helped:

boric acid - I fill up a "00" size capsule from the health food store and put it in my vagina as high as it will go. I always feel much better within a few hours and for at least the next few days. I got it at rite-aid. it feels gritty and irritating during sex unless you remove it first by putting water on your finger and sweeping out the little grits until it all dissolves. It does create kind of a watery discharge and can create a bit of a mild burning sensation if i am already irritated in there but it leaves me feeling great by the next day

vaginal probiotics- i also pour this into a capsule carefully and stick a few in there once the boric acid has helped kill off some of the bad bacteria. bio K plus works the best for me, it really is live and active. anything dried in a capsule or normal yogurt (often just has "live" powdered bacteria mixed in) doesnt help at all.

folic acid- I noticed some improvement after starting on 800mcg once per day.

        Here's what I don't recommend:

douching - definitely provided temporary relief but allowed the infection to return worse.

antibiotics - i took oral antibiotics for a few months which helped me feel better at the time but, just like douching, allowed it to return with a vengeance!

HANG IN THERE, HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!

Although i am new to this site i am not new to bv. i was born with an imporforate hymen and since the discovery of this at age 15 (now nearly 27) i have had bv and mixed aeneorobs. I have had every treatment for this all the gels and tablets you can imagine and they only help for a day at most. my gynie is awesome and has really been trying her best to help. i have had it that long, i don't so much get discharge any more my vagina walls at certain times in my cycle are coated in a thick dry sticky discharge that does not go anywhere. I have had tests for everything and am clear apart from bv. My old doctor would have you believe your immune system should get rid of bv on it's own. I am really at my wits end. so i read all this with great interest and my gynie is phoning me at 4.45 when she finishes clinic to discuss if all this is safe cause H2O2 is for dying hair in my book. The smell is the worst thing for me and my partner and it has varing degrees depending on time of my cycle. I was also interested in the part about the bv spreading to my womb and oviaries and causing infertility?? i've never heard of this although i have had a laporoscopy, colposcopy x6 and a hysteroscopy and all have been ok.

The main things for use that i can see almost everyone has been using is folic acid tea tree and h2o2?
will decide which to use after i speak to doc.

What contraceptive is everyone using? i have tried them all and the best i've found is none although taking folic acid at this time is obviously asking for trouble. I am currently using deprovera contraceptive injection which suppresses your hormones. I have spoke to the gynie about a eastrogen cream to help the vaginal dryness (luckily prescriptions are free in scotland)

[QUOTE]Do NOT put hydrogen peroxide in your vagina! That must hurt like crazy. There are good bacteria in your vagina that it would kill[QUOTE]

in my case.. my gynocologist suggested that I douche with hydrogen proxide and water, and it doesn't hurt.. I have this problem because of my period.. I'm a virgin, and it sucks..

Then I took pepto bismal too frequently, so that associated with the medicine made me have irritable bowel syndrome.. I'm afraid that it's something worse because my rectum produces nasty odors now..

Taluhah, I would suggest that you stop using tea tree oil.. I used a few drops in a bath and it didn't help me.. I cant imagine what that felt like for the process you used..

TeeLynn, when you go to the store go to someone at the pharmacy counter and ask them where the re-usable douches are if you want to go through with the hydrogen proxide process.. use one cup of water and one cup of hydrogen proxide.. you don't want to do this to frequently.. I was supposed to do it every two weeks, but I ended up waiting till the third week.. you can always do it once a month if you would prefer..

I have been using apple cider vinigar for about 4 days and it has worked brillaintly. I have also been taking b vits, vit c and folic acid. tried the tea tree oil as well but not instant results.

how often do you use the vinigar method?
Also been drinking more water to help

Im new here so I thought Id share my story as well, Ive had chronice BV for almost 4 years now and have tried everything from pills, to gels, creams and NOTHING has worked! Ive tried to change my diet, wear cotten underwear, changed detergents and soaps so that nothing has dye or perfumes as well as every kind of vitamins! For those of you that say vitamin D is the cure you are sooo wrong!! This is obviously a serious problem here cause we've all joined this website to seek help. Ive never had any major surgeries either so thats not it and sticking anything else in my vagina is not an option! Ive gotten my thyroid checked and its normal, my next step is checking my hormones as well as my blood level counts because I found out they are low so Im gonna see if fixing that will help any. probiotics dont help either, so when I say Ive tried everything I mean Ive tried everything!!! I think as long as we all keep updating this site with things we've tried we can cross out the things that dont work and brain storm on other possibilities. Just for a little insite on myself, Im 28yrs old and have 2 kids and have been married for 7 yrs so there hasnt been anyting significant that has happened in my life that would cause this chronic infection that NEVER goes away!! Please keep up the research!
