Communication is especially important because men and women often have different ideas of what's arousing and pleasing. For example he might be happy enough hammering away for a few minutes but that's probably not going to make her happy. And he probably won't get it unless they communicate. And then she ends up not liking sex and he ends up frustrated, and they're the stereotypical oversexed husband and cold wife.
One unfortunate obstacle to this is the mentality that men that like sex are men and women that like sex are ****s. Of course communication is going to be more difficult if she is afraid to communicate an interest in sex in the first place out of fear of coming across as immoral. Then there is also the belief that men should be happy enough with the physical aspect, and they might then be afraid to communicate what their emotional needs are out of fear of coming across as weak.
