Although there isn't a lot of research done on sexuality, there are some. There was a "stinky shirt" study that observed which shirts (worn by men for several days with not deodrant/cologne) women were attracted to. The men and women did not see each other at all. it was done purely on scent. Women found shirts of men whom they were more genetically suited for (meaning their genetic makeup wasn't too similar where they are likely to produce children with genetic disorders). So there is a subconscious selection towards the better genetic partner. this is animal insticts at its pureness.
However, we have to remember that humans tend to defy animal instincts with the use to pharmacueticals, social constructs, religion and cultural factors. therefore there is truth in both sides of the arguement.
I also wanted to clarify about the novalty factor. Women are more likely to orgasm for a long term parnter than a one night stand. Now these are pure numbers. It could be because the long term partner know's her body better, could be he is a better genetic parnter (that is why the relationship has lasted), etc. We don't know the reason. I want to point out that novalty does not necessarily mean more orgasms.
