Before we dive into our review, there is some important background information you should know regarding what the terms “natural” and “organic” really mean.
What Does The Term “Natural” Really Mean For Personal Lubricants?
The term “natural” has become a bit of a hot buzzword in recent years, but there isn’t necessarily one clear definition of the term.
One company may claim that a product is natural if 75% or more of its ingredients are minimally-processed and acquired from nature.
Another company might have stricter guidelines regarding what ingredients qualify as “natural,” using that term to reference their own standards.
Sarah Sloane, a sexuality educator and writer, told me that the term “natural” often has a different meaning depending on how the term is used and who is using it. She explained to me:
“The term “natural” is misused by so many manufacturers, so it’s important to think about what we intend when we say that we want to use natural products. Many lubricants have plant-derived ingredients that are listed by their chemical names, so it can be very confusing!
In general, though, we think of natural lubricants as being made of ingredients that are naturally occurring, rather than created in laboratories, so going beyond the label and understanding what the company means by saying that they’re “natural” or “organic” is really important.”
You may also see the term “vegan” paired with the term “natural,” although the terms aren’t synonymous.
Vegan products contain no animal products or by-products, whereas the “natural” designation on a label is considerably more ambiguous.
In our review, when we refer to “natural lubricants,” we mean lubricants that are made up of primarily natural — as in, from nature — minimally processed ingredients.
- What Does The Term Hypoallergenic Mean?
The term “hypoallergenic” is often coupled with the word “natural.”
Anything labeled “hypoallergenic” suggests that the product is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
However, the FDA notes that there’s no standard definition of the term.
“[Hypoallergenic] means whatever a particular company wants it to be,” according to the FDA, so the term can be used freely, much like the term “natural.”
Although the FDA approves personal lubricants, the term, “hypoallergenic,” has no bearing.
What Does The Term “Organic” Really Mean For Personal Lubricants?
The term “organic” generally means an item is produced without chemicals.
In the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Organic Program is primarily responsible for identifying organic agricultural products.
While some non-agricultural wares, such as lubricants, may receive USDA Organic certification, it’s not a necessity.
Not all organic lubricants are labeled as meeting a specific standard; the USDA states the following in regard to items labeled as organic or items with the USDA Organic Seal:
“Non-organic ingredients allowed per the National List may be used, but no more than five percent of the combined total ingredients may contain non-organic content. Additionally, the label must include the name of the certifying agent, and may include the USDA Organic Seal and/or the organic claim.”
Ultimately, this means that 95% of the ingredients used in a personal lubricant that is either labeled “organic” or that has a USDA Organic Seal, must be organic.
Additionally, if a product is labeled as “100% Organic”, then ALL ingredients must be certified organic.
The world’s first organic standards were initially developed in the United Kingdom by the Soil Association in the 1960s.
A small number of lubricants meet these standards today, as the Soil Association complies with European standards, which are generally more strict than those in the United States.
There are other meaningful organic standards for personal lubricants as well, including the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) organic standards.
In our review, when referring to “organic lubricants,” we mean products that have been labeled as organic and are sold within the U.S.
All lubricants labeled as organic should be made up of at least 95% organic ingredients.
Are Natural And Organic Personal Lubricants Safe?
Just because an ingredient is natural doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s safe! Likewise, natural and organic lubricants can and will expire — they’re usually good for at least a year after opening the bottle, provided they’re kept in a temperature-controlled and consistent environment.
Chief Education Officer at health and sexual wellness company Foria, Kiana Reeves said when it comes to ingredients to avoid, try not to use “anything you can’t pronounce.”
“I like to say if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth — don’t put it on your genitals,” she explained.
Likewise, Dr. Kimberly Langdon, a retired board-certified OB/GYN and a medical advisor for Medzino, added that you shouldn’t automatically trust that a lubricant is safe to use just because it is labeled “organic” or “natural.”
“Just because a lubricant is natural or organic does not mean that it has [fewer] chemicals,” she said. “Herbs and plant-based ingredients all have chemicals, sometimes far more than synthetic ones.”
There are several specific ingredients you should avoid in natural lubricants, including:
Glycerin is a common ingredient in many natural lubricants, but both glycerin and petroleum jelly have been found to increase the risk of vaginal infections when they’re used in lubricants.
Additionally, glycerin raises the osmolality of personal lubricant — which can increase your risk of experiencing genital or anal irritation during use.
While there is some debate about whether or not parabens truly have a negative impact on one’s health, there have been studies that have linked parabens to endocrine disruption and certain types of cancers.
Added fragrances, flavors, and dyes are common causes of irritation in lubricants, so it’s usually best to avoid them entirely, particularly if you have sensitive skin.
Finally, make sure to look for any ingredients you’re personally allergic or sensitive to.
Many natural and organic lubricants include ingredients like coconut oil or almond oil, and nothing kills the mood quicker than an allergic reaction!
Before using any natural or organic lubricant, it’s also recommended that you do a patch test on a small area of skin, like your inner elbow, just to check for potential reactions.
- A Note About Safe pH & Osmolality Levels In Personal Lubricants
The pH of a personal lubricant is important, as having higher vaginal pH (above 4.5) can contribute to infections.
What this means is that consistently using a lubricant with significantly higher pH values could increase your likelihood of infections, as well.
Studies about the effect of a lubricant’s pH on fertility aren’t entirely conclusive at this point.
Some suggest that using a personal lubricant with neutral pH is preferable when you’re trying to conceive, so it’s best to do your own research beforehand.
The pH scale ranges from 0-14; as such, neutral pH stands at 7. The human body is close to neutral, with blood registering a pH of 7.4 and human cells at 6.8.
When selecting a personal lubricant, it’s wise to choose one that is pH-balanced to the part of the body it will come in contact with.
Additionally, a personal lubricant’s osmolality matters as well, although this is only a factor for water-based products.
Osmolality refers to the concentration of ingredients in a solution that aren’t water. Lubes with too high osmolality can cause burning, itching and dryness in the vagina and anus.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lubricants that have an osmolality of 380 mOsm/kg or lower are safest, with their highest recommendations having an osmolality of 1200 mOsm/kg.
